Aberrant spectres are Slayer monsters that require level 60 Slayer to kill. They frequently drop large amounts of valuable herbs and herb seeds. A Macaw Summoning familiar is helpful as it will improve herb drops (requires level 41 Summoning), as will herb gloves (a reward from the Fist of Guthix minigame). They are an excellent source of medium-high level herbs such as ranarrs and lantadymes, and also drop various low-high priced seeds.

Strengths and weaknesses

Aberrant spectres have an abhorrent stench that drains stats and life points very quickly, so they are very deadly to fight without proper protection. A Nose peg, Slayer helmet, or Full slayer helmet protects against the stench.

Spectres use a fast and very accurate Magic-based attack with a max hit of 119, which will hit fairly often even with a high magic defence. This can be especially hard on combat familiars like the Spirit terrorbird, to the point that one's stay is usually limited by the familiar's lifespan, rather than by one's own. If fought without a nose peg or slayer helmet you will be hit for 118 every hit.

If you choose to tank aberrant spectres, high magic defence or prayer protection against magic is vital. Some recommendations are listed below. During a trip the Spectres should drop enough valuable herbs to make a profit over the cost of the Prayer potions used. However, it is much more profitable to just bring an inventory of medium-high level food and use that over prayer potions. By time your food is used up, you have a full inventory of high level herbs to sell. Aberrant spectres also drop high-value seeds. Check current prices when in doubt.

If the player wishes to restore prayer for free, methods such as the Ardougne cloak teleport, or using a Player-owned house with a Chapel may come in handy. From there, a player might use their Portal Chamber or a Mounted Glory to bank or a Ring of kinship to teleport to Daemonheim and bank there, then teleport back to the slayer tower using a Ring of slaying.

Spectres have a low ranged magical attack. Players can take advantage of this in the Slayer Tower and Desert Slayer Dungeon by luring them into an obstacle and using a long-ranged attack with crossbows or specific bows. The hand cannon, Zaryte bow, and the Crystal bow have a sufficient range distance of 10 on all rapid styles, making you able to safespot them easily and quickly.

Slaying smelly spectres in the Tower.

Killing aberrant spectres at the Slayer Tower is often used as a way to make money, due to the short distance between the tower and the bank in Canifis, especially if the player can use the Agility shortcuts in the tower. Faster banking can be achieved by teleportation, such as using a Ring of kinship to bank at Daemonheim or a Ring of duelling to bank at Castle Wars and then a Ring of slaying, Kharyrll Teleport or a Portal Chamber to teleport back to the tower. Alternatively, quick banking can be done with the Tokkul-zo and teleporting to the Fight Caves, where it is easy to bank and access the fairy ring system, returning to Canifis using the fairy ring code CKS which is very close to the Slayer Tower. Another way to get herbs for a very long time without banking is, when inventory is full of herbs, use the Tool leprechaun at the farming patch due south of the Slayer Tower to note the herbs and then return to the tower. This is faster than banking in Canifis (about twice as fast) but not as fast as teleporting to the bank and returning. A nice way to bank up your items is to be on Ancient Magicks, use the Edgeville Teleport, and return using a Kharyrll Teleport, which requires 2 laws and one blood rune. Another useful method is to use the Ardougne Cloak's Monastery Teleport when you run out of prayer to restore your prayer at the altar there. Just beside this is a bush patch where players can have their herb drops noted by the Tool Leprechaun there, then simply use your preferred method of transportation back to the Slayer Tower.

Players will need to traverse around the ground floor for those without the needed 61 Agility to reach them. Spectres here are aggressive so players can, if possible, AFK train on them as long as they are using the Prayer method; otherwise they have a high risk of dying inside. Spectres here are in lower numbers compared to the Desert Slayer Dungeon, and are fairly spread out to numbers of one to three in several areas. Players also come here to do their tasks so it might be suggested to use their other location for a slayer task.

Guthan's set could be used to heal on the nearby Bloodveld or other monsters, but take care not to equip Guthan's set before leaving the Aberrant Spectres area. Furthermore, bloodveld use a magic-based attack, so this strategy could backfire. For those with high agility, the crawling hands down the chain rope may be a better healing option. Keep in mind that cannons are not permitted in the tower.

Should a player die, it will take around 2–3 minutes to run from Canifis to their gravestone, or around 1–2 minutes using the Agility shortcut that takes you to them. Always keep a spare nosepeg/Slayer helm should your protection be in the gravestone.

Players who use Summoning familiars can recharge their summoning points at the obelisk on the way to the tower (players with a Menagerie at their house can also recharge summoning there).

Pollnivneach Slayer Dungeon

A player who has completed the Smoking Kills quest and wearing a Slayer helmet may wish to take advantage of the multicombat nature of this dungeon. These spectres are non-aggressive. There is a Summoning obelisk in the area with the spectres, and quick access can be gained by moving one's house to Pollnivneach, using chipped teleport tabs (requires completion of the Love Story quest), or using a Ring of slaying to teleport there. In the dungeon you will need to contend with smoke as well as the Aberrant spectre's stench, so a Slayer helmet is highly recommended. The smoke, however, will only damage players down to 10 life points, so it is possible to use a nose peg, with the Protect from Magic prayer, to avoid damage from the spectres and remain at 10 life points. A mistake though will most likely kill you so players should be careful about AFK training here.

This place is more deserted than the Slayer Tower, making it an ideal option to finish a whole task quickly and efficiently. Those that don't use a cannon will need to click on each one since, as stated above, these are non-aggressive to players. Players can quickly get to this location with having at least a specific construction level to move your house to Pollnivneach, moving a little south-east to the well and taking the southeast or southwest staircases. Players who do not have a house there can use a Broomstick to rebank at Shantay Pass. They can also use the Al-Kharid Lodestone, bank at the nearby bank and use the carpet ride to Pollnivneach for a extremely fast bank time.

This is a popular location to use combat familiars and/or a cannon, preferably while praying against magic, as many Spectres will be attacking.

Aberrant spectres are one of the races who have lesser champions in the Champions' Challenge distraction and diversion. To fight the Aberrant Spectre Champion, the player must kill aberrant spectres until one drops a Champion scroll, which is an extremely rare drop.

  • Aberrant means absurd or abnormal, spectre means ghost.
  • Some players prefer to use Prayer-Flashing, to extend their trip without using any supplies. A skilled Prayer-Flasher can stay until he/she is forced to bank his/her herbs. Prayer-Flashing is not recommended when using a cannon or fighting more than one Aberrant spectre.
  • The name of the monster used to be spelled "Aberrant specter", but it was changed to the British -re ending in a hidden update several years ago.
  • This monsters examine is similar to that of the Plague frogs, which is "A very smelly frog."
  • With the bloom lighting update on 28 November 2011, the appearance of aberrant spectres changed for players who enabled the feature.
