Rock climbing boots, formerly known as just Climbing boots, can be used in the Death Plateau, Troll Stronghold, Eadgar's Ruse, and Troll Romance quests. They cannot be used to produce spiked boots. Players can also use the less expensive Climbing boots for those quests, as well.

After finishing the new version of the Death Plateau quest, players may buy rock climbing boots from Freda the dwarf for 75,000 coins or the cheaper pair of normal Climbing Boots for 12 coins, although the cheaper pair does not add the Strength bonuses. Players can purchase rock climbing boots through Freda or by conveniently buying them at the Grand Exchange.

Rock climbing boots are most commonly used to scale the Death Plateau Troll shortcut.

The Strength bonus is equal to that of rune boots. Rune boots require 40 Defence but also provide a better defence bonus at a much cheaper cost. However, Rock climbing boosts are still useful because they can be worn by pures with 1 Defence rather than the 40 required for Rune boots.

The update on 24 June 2010 introduced a large amount of coins into the game, as players could alchemise the new "rock climbing boots" for 45,000 coins, when previously (before the update), they had been purchased as "Climbing boots" for just 12 coins each. All regular climbing boots in players' banks were converted to rock climbing boots, giving these players an unexpected large profit. Many players on the RuneScape forums believed that these players were granted wealth they did not deserve, and called for a rollback; this did not occur. Mod Emilee responded with a thread giving statistics of 55% of the people had one/zero pair of boots before the update, 99% had fewer than 50 pairs of boots. Mod Mark said the highest number of boots he had seen is 1.8k. To give an idea of the immense profit that this update may have caused, the player with the most boots (1.8k) will have made a total of 135m profit (not counting the cost of the boots, which is around 25k).

Trivia

  • In a span of 30 days, rock climbing boots saw an increase of 35,277.3%. The boots rose from around 200 coins to 1400 coins before the 25th of June's update set the price at 75,000 coins (a 5,000% increase), making it one of the most inflated items in the history of RuneScape. The most inflated item ever was the 5 kg piece of Granite which increased in price 176,333% in one day due to the update which allowed it to be cut into individual pieces of 500g Granite.
