The Mindspike is a changeable version of the standard staves, the Staff of air, water, fire and earth. The mindspike (air) can be obtained as a drop from killing Magic Stick during the Troll Warzone tutorial, or after as a drop from killing Troll shamans, which are in the east portion of the Troll cave north of Burthorpe. You can change the element of the mindspike by right-clicking on the item and selecting "Change element", making it a mindspike (water), mindspike (earth) or mindspike (fire). You can change the element back and forth with no tangible limitations. This can be handy as you don't need to bring all the different elemental runes to have all the teleports, instead you can change the mindspike's elemental rune to the elemental rune needed for the teleport or spell. This way you can save a lot of inventory space (note: it takes longer time to teleport this way).
Note: If you want a second Mindspike, you must change the element of the mindspike to any element other than air. Even if there is a Mindspike (air) in your bank, you cannot receive a second mindspike unless the element is changed. Once a second mindspike is dropped, you can change all mindspikes to any element so that they may stack in a bank.
(You may however pick up a second Mindspike (air) as an unwanted drop by another player.)
Note: There is another way to obtain more than one mindspike. If you obtained one from the Troll Shamans there is the quest: "Druidic Ritual" In which you come across Magic Stick, a level 13 Troll shaman, the drop rate is 100%
All mindspikes have the same special attack, which takes up 75% of the special attack bar and is a rune-free spell of the staff's element which has a 100% chance of inflicting 50 damage, and is not affected by Magic Damage bonuses. This attack is generally good when safespotting something or when you are low on runes and are facing a enemy that has low life left. While this staff is easy obtainable for lower levels it has the highest magic accuracy and defence when compared to any other elemental staves (even Battle and Mystic staves), and also offers a +1 bonus to prayer. This makes this staff a very good choice when training Magic. However these advantages are at the cost of the melee bonuses that the other staves have.

Trivia
- The Mindspike is the fourth magic weapon with a special attack, after the Staff of light, Penance trident and Penance master trident.
- Despite requiring only level 1 Magic to wield, it has the highest magic attack bonus available up until the Ancient staff at level 50, which has +15 magic attack.
- As of 6 March 2012, each Mindspike now has a special attack according to the element it is attuned to. For example, the Mindspike (air) uses a wind spell. Previously, all versions of the Mindspike used a fire spell.
- There was a glitch involving the special attack, which allowed a player to use it to kill normally unattackable NPCs, such as Bankers, Vexillums, and even fishing spots and gravestones. This was quickly patched on 10 February 2012.
- It is unknown if this is a glitch or not, but the special attack of the Mindspike (fire) will always miss on the mummies with 10 life points in the Jaldraocht Pyramid.
- Currently, the mindspike's special attack will not activate when casting Crumble Undead.
