Mummies are undead creatures found in the Pyramid Plunder minigames, during quests such as Desert Treasure and Dealing with Scabaras, and in the Chaos Tunnels.

Mummies are well known for dropping Ancient staves, although this is a quite rare drop. If you've purchased an Ancient staff from Eblis and lost it, and do not want to buy one from another player, killing these monsters is your only choice.

Strengths and weaknesses

The level 84 mummies are rather weak for their level, hitting a maximum of 60 life points. On the other hand, the level 125 and 138 mummies are far stronger, with a max hit of 243, and can hit consistently even through strong armour (Rune armour and Dragon armour). For this reason, players should consider using Protect from Melee/Deflect Melee when meleeing them. This is especially recommended when fighting mummies in desert areas such as Ullek, where many players wear low-defence Desert camouflage gear or Desert robes to reduce water consumption and avoid the effects of desert heat.

The result of using a fire spell on a mummy.

Mummies have a high melee Defence, which suggests that players use Super set potions. Despite this high melee defence, stab attacks appear to be quite effective at breaking through their armour, so a Zamorakian spear or a chaotic rapier would be a good choice for melee.

Mummies are Undead, which means that wearing a Salve amulet (e) provides a significant combat boost. Despite being undead, the Magic spell Crumble Undead does not affect mummies, contrary to the beliefs and wishes of some players. Mummies are weak to fire magic spells. When hit by a fire spell, the mummy catches on fire, although this effect does not cause any more damage than the spell itself. (The Mummy Champion actually rises in level when catching on fire.) When a burning mummy is killed by a fire spell, the mummy turns into a level 96 'Mummy ashes' standing, charred corpse, and then collapses and disappears, with the mummy's drops then appearing.

Ice spells and chinchompas

There is an area in the Chaos Tunnels with 12 aggressive mummies, making it a great place to train using Red chinchompas, normal Chinchompas or Ancient Magicks, particularly ice spells like Ice Burst and Ice Barrage. Although these methods of training can be expensive, the Ancient staff and rune items the mummies drop help cover a 65% part of the expense. They frequently drop emerald items, if which are picked up, can cover 90% or all of the expenses.

Players may reach up to approximately 230,000 experience per hour using Red chinchompas at level 99; the second fastest Ranged experience in the game, right after skeleton monkeys on Ape Atoll if done the method of gathering up the mummies and attacking them. There was a newly discovered method giving an average of 550+exp per Red chinchompa at level 85+ range. This could be done by gathering all 12 mummies so that they were aggressive to you and not stuck behind an obstacle, then, walking back and forth in a line, one square to the left and right repeatedly. This would cause the mummies to 'pile' on each other so that they were all standing on the same spot. This method allowed you to attack all 12 mummies at the same time and was the best ranged experience in the game. However, Jagex has fixed this. You can now only hit 9 monsters max with chinchompas and barrage spells.

Swamp titans

Swamp titans are useful auxiliaries when fighting mummies in Multicombat areas like the Chaos Tunnels or Ullek. Although the swamp titan's normal melee attack is not particularly strong against mummies, its special move, swamp plague, is quite effective as it can poison numerous mummies. The poison starts at 58 damage and decreases over time. The basic strategy is to use a protection prayer, attack the mummies with your preferred style, and frequently use the swamp titan's special move to keep poisoning the mummies. (The special move is a two-step process; see the Swamp titan article for details about how to use the move.)

Locations

Although the Pyramid Plunder level 84 mummies are weak for their level, most players regard it a waste of time to train on them, as they only drop ashes. Mummies are only found by opening the sarcophagi in the pyramid, and there's a chance there will be no mummy in a sarcophagus. It takes several seconds to open a sarcophagus; there's just one sarcophagus in each of the eight rooms in the pyramid; each room requires a minimum Thieving level to enter (21 for the first room, rising to 91 for the eighth room).

Champions' Challenge

Mummies are one of the 'races' who have lesser champions in the Champions' Challenge activity. To fight the Mummy Champion, the player must kill mummies until one drops a Champion scroll, which is a very rare drop.

Trivia

  • The mummies that come out of the sarcophagi in the Jaldraocht Pyramid have 10 life points, a maximum hit of 170, and can only be killed by fire spells. What's more interesting is that they are also level 138 like the mummies roaming around the pyramid and have the same drops as the roaming mummies. There are also two or three places in the pyramid where no roaming mummies will attack the player.
  • While on fire, mummies' examine text changes. This only happens if the player continues to use fire spells. Otherwise, it will change back.
  • When a burning mummy is killed and turns into 'Mummy ashes' as it dies, the Mummy ashes are always level 96, despite the original mummy's level. In the brief time they are present, Mummy ashes cannot be attacked (but can be examined).
  • In February 2012, the mummies in the Chaos Tunnels and in the Jaldraocht Pyramid had their combat levels increased from 103 to 138. This also increased their Ancient Effigy drop rates. This made them popular for players to target them, as they only have 10 life points and they're easily killed by even the weakest types of fire spells. Their popularity has dropped since the effigy drop rate reduction.
  • It is unknown if this is a glitch or not, but the Mindspike's Rune Flame special attack will always miss on the 10 lifepoint mummies in the Jaldraocht Pyramid.
