The Third-age melee set is made by exchanging a Third-age full helmet, Third-age platebody, Third-age platelegs, and Third-age kiteshield with the Grand Exchange clerk. The set's purpose is purely to save space and for use in the Grand Exchange. Players can exchange this set with a Grand Exchange clerk to receive the items listed above. To wear this armour, players need to have at least 65 Defence. This armour can not be bought in stores or be made through the Smithing skill.
The Third-age melee set is currently one of the most powerful melee armour sets in RuneScape. In addition to being very powerful, the Third age melee set is one of the rarest and most expensive armours in RuneScape. One of the main reasons this armour costs so much is because of the rarity of the reward while doing a level 3 Treasure Trail. While it is currently considered to be the best non-degradable armour in the game, Bandos armour offers better magic defence, prayer, and strength bonuses, and because it is far cheaper, is more widely used than Third-age armour. Players more commonly wear this set to show their wealth rather than use in combat and risking the loss of any item that protects under these armour pieces.
It was long thought that the chances of obtaining a piece of third-age armour was of about 1 in 10,000 (according to Paul Gower), however, it was confirmed that the odds are lower than 1 in 100,000 <ref>Mod Maylea.
