The rune thrownaxe, like all thrownaxes, is a members-only Ranged throwing weapon and is the third most powerful type of thrownaxe. To wield a rune thrownaxe the player must have at least 40 Ranged.
They can be obtained either by buying from the Tribal Weapons store at the Ranging Guild, looting from a ninja impling, or trading with another player. As it is a one-handed projectile, the rune thrownaxe can be wielded with a shield or god book for protection.
Players cannot smith this item.
Uses
The rune thrownaxe is seldom used as a primary weapon. All thrownaxes with the exception of Morrigan's are widely considered useless by players for combat, as a shortbow or composite bow fire at with same speed (or faster), with better accuracy, and with more power depending on the arrows used. However the unique special attack of the rune thrownaxe, and the fact that it is one-handed, may make it useful in certain situations.
Special Attack
The rune throwing axe has a special attack called Chain Hit. This attack hurls the axe away from the player, hitting multiple targets (maximum of 6) and using 10% of the special bar for each target it hits. One application of this is gaining the attention of Tz-tok jad's healers. It is also used to knock down the doors to get to the ladder in the east part of Waterbirth Island dungeon.

Trivia
- As with all throwing axes, the rune throwing axe looks somewhat similar to a battleaxe of the same metal.
- When the special attack is used, multiple rune thrownaxes can be seen if it struck multiple targets.
- Using the special attack causes the axe to temporarily take on the appearance of a steel one.
- There was a glitch where using the special attack while having ammo equipped (bolts, arrows, etc.) would prompt a message stating "You can't use that ammunition with your bow." This has since been fixed.
