The Rune berserker shield is a reward that can be purchased with 300 tokens from the Fist of Guthix minigame. It can also be bought (in its uncharged state) on the Grand Exchange and recharged for 30 tokens. If you buy it from the Grand Exchange you can still charge it for 30 tokens just 'use' it on Reggie the rewards trader. It requires 45 defence to wield. When charged, it gives slightly higher defensive bonuses than a Rune kiteshield (along with a strength bonus), making it the second best free-to-play melee shield next to the Corrupt Dragon Square Shield (which is not easily obtained).
It is not recommended to wield this while training magic with combat or ranged, because of the negative ranged and magic attack bonus.
When combined with a Rune battleaxe, the Rune 2h sword only has +2 strength bonus more than the combination. This combination has a higher damage per second rate than the Rune 2h, since the Rune 2h will only do 10 life points higher when comparing their maximum hits. This makes the combination a better alternative to use than the Rune 2h for serious combat. In comparison with the Obsidian shield, the Rune berserker shield's melee defence bonus is better; but its defence against ranged is considerably lower; also the magic and strength bonus are a tiny bit lower. Furthermore the Obsidian shield is arguably easier to acquire than the Rune berserker shield which also does degrade.
Like Barrows equipment its bonuses will only decrease after the shield has completely degraded to 0% (after only 5 hours of solid combat), but the Barrows equipment takes 15 hours to degrade completely. When completely degraded, or uncharged, it will have lower defence bonuses than a Black kiteshield but will retain a +2 strength bonus and become tradeable. It costs 30 Fist of Guthix tokens to recharge the Rune Berserker 0 shield.
As with all Fist of Guthix equipment, this item cannot be made using the Smithing skill.
