The zaryte bow is an enchanted Zarosian longbow that requires 80 Ranged to wield. Released on 10 January 2011, it is dropped exclusively by Nex, the Zarosian leader of the Ancient Prison in the God Wars Dungeon. The zaryte bow is among the most accurate and powerful Ranged weapons in RuneScape, with accuracy equal to the chaotic crossbow and damage equal to runite bolts. Like the crystal bow, the zaryte bow supplies its own ammunition, removing the need for players to use and manage their own arrows when using it.

After firing 60,000 shots, the zaryte bow degrades and requires repair before it can be used again. Bob the smith in Lumbridge can repair the bow at a price of 20,000 coins per percent of charge (2 million coins for a full repair). Players with an armour stand in their player-owned house can repair the bow themselves for a decreased cost according to their Smithing level (up to a 50% discount for a player with 99 Smithing and a Smithing cape).

Wielding a zaryte bow, or wearing any piece of torva, pernix, or virtus armour, will cause all factions of monsters in the God Wars Dungeon (aside from the monsters in the generals' rooms and Zarosian monsters in the Ancient Prison) to be unaggressive.

Comparison to other weapons

Chaotic crossbow

The chaotic crossbow, a weapon commonly compared to the zaryte bow.

The zaryte bow has the same Ranged accuracy as the chaotic crossbow, a Dungeoneering reward item. Additionally, its Ranged strength is equal to that of runite bolts. While the zaryte bow and chaotic crossbow are often compared and contrasted, each has its own advantages and disadvantages:

  • The zaryte bow can be purchased from other players, while the chaotic crossbow must be earned from training Dungeoneering.
  • The zaryte bow can only fire its own ammunition; the chaotic crossbow is capable of firing almost any type of bolt, including enchanted bolts with special effects such as extra damage and armour piercing.
  • The zaryte bow is two-handed, preventing the use of a shield or god book, either of which may be used with the chaotic crossbow. This distinction is particularly important to players who wish to fight dragons with Ranged and who cannot use super antifire potions.
  • Discounting its purchase price, the zaryte bow is far cheaper to use than the chaotic crossbow. The zaryte bow's cost per shot is anywhere between 33.33 and 16.66 coins, depending on how it is repaired and, if repaired at an armour stand, the Smithing level of its owner. The chaotic crossbow, on the other hand, costs either 166.66 coins per shot, or 16.66 coins and 1.66 Dungeoneering tokens per shot, in addition to the cost of ammunition. To fire runite bolts, which would equal the zaryte bow's Ranged strength, would add an extra 135.8 coins per shot, assuming a 20% rate of bolt breaking.
  • The zaryte bow lasts for 60,000 shots, a total of 50 hours of use on Rapid or 60 hours of use on Accurate or Longranged. However, the chaotic crossbow lasts for up to 12,000 shots, or 10 hours of use. Additionally, the chaotic crossbow's charges may be more quickly depleted by attacks received, not simply attacks made; the zaryte bow only loses charge when shots are fired.
  • The zaryte bow provides protection from all factions of monsters in the God Wars Dungeon, with the exception of Zarosian monsters in the Ancient Prison. The chaotic crossbow provides no protection.
  • The arrows fired by the zaryte bow cannot be retrieved, rendering Ava's device unnecessary. A zaryte bow can be efficiently used along with any cape. Bolts fired by the chaotic crossbow may be retrieved, and Ava's device may be used to reduce ammunition costs and prolong trips.
  • The zaryte bow's attack range is larger than that of the chaotic crossbow.

Other weapons

The zaryte bow's Ranged accuracy is surpassed by the magic longbow (sighted) by 20 points. However, the latter can only fire arrows up to and including god arrows, which have +60 Ranged strength compared to the zaryte bow's +115. Additionally, god arrows are much more expensive than the zaryte bow's charges.

Several types of Ranged weapons and ammunition surpass the zaryte bow in Ranged strength, such as hand cannon shot (+150), Morrigan's javelin (+145), bakriminel bolts (+125), royal bolts (+125), onyx bolts and enchanted onyx bolts (+120), dominion crossbow (+120), dragon bolts and enchanted dragon bolts (+117), and Morrigan's throwing axe (+117).

Trivia

  • The zaryte bow was released alongside torva, pernix, and virtus armours. Torva, pernix, and virtus are Latin words with different meanings; however, "zaryte" is not a real-life word, Zaryte probably means it is alligned to Zaros.
  • In the Behind the Scenes article announcing the upcoming release of the zaryte bow, it was claimed that the bow would be "as powerful as dragonstone-tipped rune bolts". However, upon release, it was found that the bow is in fact equal to regular runite bolts. Based on the statement in the Behind the Scenes article, some players expected the zaryte bow to have a dragonfire special effect, much like enchanted dragon bolts.
  • The zaryte bow is the only God Wars Dungeon weapon (aside from the steam battlestaff) that does not have a prayer bonus.
  • Upon release, the zaryte bow was initially priced at 60,000,000 coins in the Grand Exchange.
  • The zaryte bow's ammunition looks similar to a crystal bow's ammunition, except that an arrow fired by the zaryte bow has a purple aura instead of a green one.
  • On both sides of the grip of the Zaryte bow is a purple symbol that resembles the Triforce, a possible reference to an iconic symbol of the action-adventure video game series The Legend of Zelda. Adding to that, it has an appearance similar to the Iron Bow from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
  • The zaryte bow was graphically updated, along with the God Wars Dungeon and most items that drop from there, on 5 September 2012.
