The Magic shortbow is a powerful shortbow that can use metallic arrows up to rune. It can also fire Guthix, Saradomin, and Zamorak arrows, granting a range strength bonus of +60 as opposed to +49 (rune). The magic shortbow requires a Ranged level of 50 or higher to wield.
Members can make a magic shortbow through the Fletching skill at level 80. First, a player must cut an unstrung magic shortbow from magic logs, granting 83.25 Fletching experience. Then, the player must string the unstrung magic shortbow with a bow string, granting a further 83.25 experience.
This is the most frequently used bow by middle to high level rangers for training due to its speed and special attack, not to mention its use by many well-known player killers. The price and availability of magic shortbows also contributes to their popularity.
It was a common player killing weapon until the Wilderness update in December 2007, but regained much of its former popularity with the release of PVP worlds. In 2011, an update removed the PvP worlds and the Wilderness becomes an area for dangerous player killing once more, but magic shortbows never regained their former popularity.
Magic shortbows are commonly used to high alchemise since the buying price is lower than the coins retrieved from alchemising the item.

Trivia
- When the Magic Shortbow was first released, the special attack only used 35% of the player's special attack energy. This allowed for two quick shots, that—with enough luck—could allow a player to one-shot another player. This was said to be too "powerful", and Jagex changed it to the current 55% special attack usage.
- In conjunction with a Ring of vigour, which reduces the cost of all performed special attacks by 10%, the Magic Shortbow would have the ability to use the special attack twice in a row.
- The magic shortbow used to be the fastest firing bow in runescape when used with the rapid setting. However, after the animation updates and the addition of strings to bows, all bows now fire at roughly the same speed.
