This Historical timeline briefly chronicles, in rough chronological order, the events of Gielinor, providing a starting point for those interested in the history of RuneScape. The history of Gielinor is incredibly in-depth, spanning 12,000 years and thousands of important events.

These 12,000 years are divided into five distinct ages, each of which has its own distinct events and history.

Timeline

First Age

The First Age was the dawn of Gielinor, during which the god Guthix shaped the world into what we know today. The First Age was roughly 4,000 years long.

Guthix discovers Gielinor 1 Guthix, the God of Balance, discovers an "empty" plane, possibly created by Jas and the Elder gods, which he begins to mould into the world of Gielinor. During this time he creates many of the world's innumerable flora, fauna, and races while bringing in the rest from other worlds and realms. Guthix would continue to shape the world for over 4,000 years.
Existence of the Elder Dragons 1, or Possibly Earlier One widely dejected theory suggests that the Elder Dragons, more commonly known as the Dragonkin, lived in Gielinor before even Guthix discovered it. These creatures were infused with the Anima Mundi, or the world soul, and without them the world itself could not survive. To protect themselves, they created the Wyrms, a race of super-dragons from which all modern dragons are descended.
Arrival of Seren Unknown According to the Prifddinas' history book, Seren discovers Gielinor. She settles in the forests of Isafdar where she clears the part of the northern Isafdar forest. In the middle of the clearing, she constructs the Tower of Voices.
Arrival of the Elves Unknown The eight elven clans are led to Gielinor through the World Gate from another world by Seren, their goddess. She leads them to a massive clearing in the forest of Isafdar, where she had built the Tower of Voices. Here the elves construct the city of Prifddinas of Elven Crystal.
Arrival of the Humans Unknown Guthix leads a small group of humans through the Portal of Life located somewhere east of the White Wolf Mountain. Guthix told them to feel free to use, but not abuse the environment they lived in. Humans were also the first race to whom elves made contact with.
The Enslavement of the inhabitants of Yu'biusk Unknown, may be prior to First Age Bandos discovers Yu'biusk, and forces its inhabitants to worship him and build monuments for him. He also taught goblins metal-working, war and farming. Later he also crossbreeds a goblin and ork, resulting the creation of hobgoblins.
The Myriad Civilization Unknown The Myriad are created by Guthix. This race creates a civilization of crystalline spires and gemstone cities in what is now known as southern Misthalin. The Myriad, though able to create this unrivalled beauty, were as soft as snowflakes, but prospered on through the Age. The light creatures were spawned from the refractions of light through the Myriad City.
Sleep of Guthix Approximately 4,000 Guthix, wearied from his 4,000 year long shaping of Gielinor, traveled into the bowels of the earth, where he fell into a deep slumber that would last more than 6,000 years. This would mark the beginning of the Second Age.

Second Age

The Second Age was the dawn of civilization in Gielinor. Those races that were created or brought to Gielinor in the First Age now began to create nomadic settlements, travelling as the hunt and climate dictated. At the same time, it was also an era of great strides, seeing massive kingdoms that have not been rivalled since. The Second Age lasted roughly 2,000 years long.

The Arrival of the Gods Throughout Years 1 to 2,000 With Guthix asleep, Gielinor attracted the attention of many other divine beings from other worlds and planes of existence. These gods, varying greatly in nature, gained large followings and were able to directly interact with the world of Gielinor.
Closing of the World Gate Probably early Second Age The World Gate, a portal created by Guthix to allow free movement between the worlds, is sealed by an unknown entity. According to Crystal of Seren book, it happened during the Second Age. This also cut off elves from the additional crystal resources.
The Founding of Hallowvale Throughout the Second Age In the fertile forested region of modern-day Morytania, the Icyene Queen Efaritay and King Ascertes arrived from a "far-off land". Here, alongside many humans, the Icyene built a peaceful kingdom dedicated to Saradomin, one of the gods that recently arrived in Gielinor. Hallowvale would soon become one of the most prosperous civilizations of the Second Age.
The Establishment of the Desert Pantheon Early Second Age One of the gods that arrived was Tumeken, who made his home in the Kharidian Desert. Here he met Elidinis, the spirit of the River Elid and his eventual wife. Their children, Icthlarin and Amascut, were born soon after as well.
Elven Expansion Early Second Age The elves, now a very established and prosperous people, set their sights on exploring the lands east of the impassable mountain range east of Tirannwn. Constructing the Arandar mountain route and the Underground Pass, many elves travel east, where they befriend the gnomes of the Tree Gnome Stronghold.
The Rise of the Menaphites Throughout the Second Age The Menaphites, a tribe of people native to the Kharid, began to grow in power in their worship to Tumeken and the ever-growing Desert Pantheon. This led to the erection of many great cities and edifices, the most prosperous of which were the great cities of Ullek and Uzer.
Arrival of Goblins, ogres, ourgs, hobgoblins and orks Throughout the Second Age

Bandos brings large groups of goblins, ogres, ourgs, hobgoblins and orks from Yu'biusk to Gielinor.

The Founding of the Kingdom of Zaros Early to Mid Second Age Zaros, one of the many gods to arrive during the Second Age, rallies a massive following in the regions that are now Asgarnia, northern Misthalin, the Wilderness, northern Morytania, and the Kharidian Desert (although there are no Ancient Magicks teleports here, some people in the desert still worship him today, so it seems likely that he once ruled there). His people both suffered and prospered under his iron-fisted rule, wiping out enemy racial and religious forces and waging war upon all they encountered. The fortress cities of Paddewwa, Kharyrll, Lassar, Dareeyak, Carrallangar, Annakarl, Senntisten, and Ghorrock were amongst the strongest in the world. It is known that most of the rest of Gielinor belonged to Saradomin, Armadyl and Seren.
Foundation of Sophanem Mid Second Age Sophanem is founded at the eastern bank of River Elid. Throughout the second age until the destruction of Ullek in the God Wars, Sophanem remained as a small village.
Kharidian-Zarosian wars Mid Second Age The expanding Zarosian Empire clashed with the Desert Pantheon's settlements. The forces of Zaros were much more powerful than the Menaphites. The territory of the Pantheon was greatly decreased.
Construction of Uzer Mastaba Mid Second Age A Pharaoh, Queen Senliten, dies. The Uzer Mastaba, one of the oldest surviving human buildings, is constructed for her.
The Arrival of the Mahjarrat Mid Second Age Icthlarin, the son of Tumeken, saved the Kharidian desert from complete rule of Zaros by bringing with him the enslaved Mahjarrat, whom he brought from the plane of Freneskae. With the help of the Mahjarrat, the previously Zaros-controlled areas were retaken.
The Betrayal of Amascut Mid Second Age Amascut, the Menaphite goddess of rebirth and destruction, becomes "warped" by her exposure to the Mahjarrat brought to Gielinor by Icthlarin. She becomes so obsessed with destruction that she begins to destroy her own temples and clergy. Her high priestesses, amongst them Neite, exiled her, cursing her to never gain a permanent form and unable to exude her full power.
Tumeken's Dream Mid Second Age In a dream, Tumeken wanders the Kharid for four days and nights, each day visiting a different part of the desert. Each day Tumeken creates a new god-child. In this way Het, Crondis, Apmeken, and Scabaras are born.
The Construction of the Duel Arena Late Second Age In the northernmost fringes of the Kharidian Desert, a massive Duel Arena is constructed by an unknown entity. Its purpose and history remain largely unknown.
The Construction of the Slayer Tower Late Second Age A massive castle is built in the north-western corner of modern Morytania. Its purpose, and history remain largely unknown too but it is likely to originally belong to Zarosian empire.
Mahjarrat abandon Ichthlarin Late Second Age Either because Icthlarin tired of their war-like ways or because the Mahjarrat escaped, the Mahjarrat were freed from his control and were accepted by the Empty Lord, Zaros.
Expansion of Zarosian Empire stops Late Second Age Zaros, now with Mahjarrat under his control, had become very powerful. Most of the other gods formed an alliance among themselves so should Zaros have attacked one of the areas occupied by other god and its followers, the other gods would rally against Zaros. The forces of Zaros were not strong enough to battle the combined forces of other gods. Thus, the Zarosian Empire reached its peak
Bandos reorganizes his followers Late Second Age Bandos sensed signs of an upcoming major war. He reorganized his followers into a vast army. It is also when Bandos decides to divide goblins into 12 tribes, each lead by their general. He also makes changes to the culture of goblins and possible other races so it was almost entirely based on warfare.
The Finding of the Staff of Armadyl Approximately 2,000 The Staff of Armadyl, a weapon imbued with the power of the god Armadyl himself, is discovered in an ancient temple by Valdez, a servant of Saradomin. The staff changes hands numerous times, eventually falling into the hands of Zamorak, a Mahjarrat general serving under Zaros.
Betrayal of Zaros Approximately 2,000 Zamorak, now in possession of the staff's godly powers, was able to execute his long-prepared plan. Alongside allies such as Lord Drakan, Thammaron, Enakhra, Lucien, Zemouregal, Viggora, and others, Zamorak attacked Zaros within his throne room. During the battle, Zaros tripped, impaling himself on the staff as it simultaneously touched Zamorak's chest. Zaros's powers were transferred to Zamorak, whilst Zaros himself faded from existence. This event would mark the beginning of the Third Age. It is possible, as Zamorak is the god of chaos, that this was his plan from the beginning.
Banishment of Zamorak Approximately 2,000 Even as Zamorak stood victorious in Zaros's throne room, the gods of Gielinor appeared before him. Though enemies of Zaros, they banished Zamorak for "killing" one of their own, sending him away from the plane of Gielinor completely. Zamorak, now ascended to godhood, returned shortly after, his followers now prepared to wage war in his name. He never managed to rule completely, however, as the fighting escalated to a full scale God War, which eventually reached a stalemate and threatened to destroy the entire world.

Third Age

The Third Age, more often known as the God Wars, were a time of constant war and turmoil. Lasting roughly 4,000 years long, the God Wars saw the reshaping of Gielinor. The Gods, still able to directly interact with the world, caused destruction that had not been seen before or since. Little survived the Wars, leaving details of the period sketchy at best.

Zarosian Extermination 1 to Early Third Age Zaros's remaining followers, now leaderless and betrayed, suffered persecution by nearly every faction to exist in the area. Many threw down their allegiance and joined their former enemies, but thousands remained loyal to their lord, whom they prayed would return to Gielinor. Despite their best efforts, Zaros's followers were quickly defeated, the few survivors forced into the wastes of the western Kharidian Desert. Only Senntisten, the greatest city of Zaros, survived the initial attacks while others were captured or destroyed. Nex, the most powerful Zarosian General, was imprisoned in the process into an ice cavern north of Trollheim. Saradominists built a temple on top of that place.
Beginning of the God Wars. Several years after the imprisonment of Nex A group of aviantese were transporting a Godsword through the mountains near Trollheim. They were ambushed by Zamorakian demons and were forced to retreat into the Saradominist temple in the north. Eventually, both the sides got reinforcements and the God Wars began. This conflict eventually escalated into a 4 war that lasted nearly 4 millennia and very nearly destroyed the world.
Fall of Hallowvale Early Third Age In exchange for Lord Lowerniel Vergidiyad Drakan, Zamorak permitted Drakan to attack Hallowvale, a huge city in southern Hallowland inhabited by Humans and Icyene. After capturing the city, it was renamed Sanguinesti Region and divided into many different parts like Meiyerditch and Darkmeyer. Surviving humans were enslaved.
First Bandos's major war activity in Gielinor Early Third Age Bandos became active during the Wars, rallying many of Gielinor's more bloodthirsty races to his side.
The Founding of Keldagrim Early Third Age As the God Wars showed no signs of slowing down, a clan of dwarves, at the time a peaceful surface-dwelling people, fell under constant attack. Realising that the God Wars could bring an end to their people, the dwarves fled beneath the mountains east of the modern-day Fremennik Province. Here, embracing the powers of magic, they created Keldagrim, a massive city that would eventually become one of the most prosperous in the world. Here the dwarfs would remain until the modern Fifth Age.
First Morytania expansions Early to late Third Age After gaining the foothold in Sanguinesti region, Lord Drakan continued to expand his empire north and west. Soon he gained control of most of Morytania, some parts of modern Eastern Misthalin and north-eastern parts of Kharidian Desert. During centuries, however, the influence of Lord Drakan in Eastern Misthalin areas and Kharidian Desert were lost. Lord Drakan even loses complete control of Northern Morytania itself several times since the God Wars, but it's repeatedly reclaimed from that time since.
Elves retreat to Tirannwn Unknown Elves abandon settlements in modern Kandarin areas and retreat to Tirannwn. They set up their main defence in Arandar. They managed to successfully hold off the attacks during the war with Cadarn Clan being the main defensive force due to its strongest military power.
Gnomes retreat under ground Unknown Gnomes, like dwarves, retreated under ground. Unlike dwarves however, they settled near places where they formerly lived, digging caves and living in the cave systems.
Temple Knights Organization formed Unknown Temple Knights order was founded by Saradomin himself to protect to defend against threats to Saradomin and the areas under his control.
Sea Slug Conflicts Unknown Mother Mallum emerged from the sea. She tried to take advantage of the chaos made by the God Wars, possessing numerous combatants and attempting world domination. She was narrowly stopped by a newly founded Saradominist organisation called the Temple Knights who managed to find a cure against sea slugs. Temple Knights also managed to imprison Mother Mallum beneath the modern-day Witchaven
First major Dagannoth Activities Unknown Dagannoths emerge about that point of time, resulting in great losses to Fremenniks
Fall of Myriad civilization Unknown Myriad civilization inhabiting the modern southern Misthalin areas is wiped out by unknown forces. Light Creatures in Lumbridge Swamp Caves are all that remain.
Feldip Hills expansion Unknown Bandos leads the ogres into the Feldip Hills, quickly wiping out the unknown local populace and claiming the land as his own.
Destruction of Uzer Approximately 3,000 to 4,000 Uzer, one of the Kharidian Desert's greatest cities, is beset by Thammaron, a demonic lieutenant of Zamorak and ally in the overthrow of Zaros. By opening a portal beneath the city, Thammaron is able to bypass the city's considerable defences, destroying the city from the inside. A last-ditch effort by an elite group of clay golems are able to wound Thammaron to the point of death, but the city falls to his remaining forces. The Zarosian Mahjarrat Azzanadra sees this and, seeking revenge, decimates Thammaron's surviving soldiers, essentially leaving the battle with no victor.
Construction of Nardah Approximately 3,000 to 4,000 (probably 3650 to 3700 ) Nardarine escaped from the northern settlement before it was destroyed between a battle of Saradominist and Zamorakian forces. She tried to reach Sophanem but ran out of supplies. She prayed to Elidinis, the desert goddess of fertility, to save her. Elidinis answered by creating an oasis on a place where Nardarine stood with a spring at its centre. This is where Nardah was eventually constructed.
Fall of Ullek Approximately 3,000 to 4,000, after destruction of Uzer Ullek was assaulted by the 3-faced demon Balfrug Kreeyath and his army. The city quickly fell, despite the fact that it was heavily protected by golems. A few survivors narrowly managed to escape through tunnels beneath Ullek where most of them headed to the small settlements Menaphos and Sophanem, which managed to survive the God Wars. The Ullek area turned into a reed swamp in time and was devoid of any intelligent life for a few millennia.
Imprisonment of Azzanadra Approximately 3,000 to 4,000 Azzanadra, one of the last Mahjarrat still loyal to Zaros, avoids several unsuccessful assassination attempts by Zamorakian worshippers. Deciding that Azzanadra is too powerful to kill, the Zamorakians manage to imprison him in the Jaldraocht Pyramid in the western Kharidian Desert. Bound by four powerful diamonds, Azzanadra is unable to escape for over 2,000 years.
The Banishment of the Dorgeshuun Approximately 3,200 The Dorgeshuun, a tribe of goblins owned by Bandos, are ordered to fight in a battle that would result in their tribe's extinction. The Dorgeshuun, led by General Bloodfist, flee to what is now Lumbridge Swamp, where they refuse to follow Bandos any longer. Bandos smites Bloodfist, but at the same time creates a crevice into which the Dorgeshuun fall. Here, trapped beneath the ground, they create the city of Dorgesh-Kaan.
The Dorgeshuun Civil War Approximately 3,300 The Dorgeshuun, now free of the God Wars, begin to prosper in the fast-growing underground city of Dorgesh-Kaan. Conflict erupts, however, when the tribal and republican factions begin to struggle for power. General Bonehelm, the tribal leader, launches an attack from the Dorgeshuun's mines, his soldiers mounted on giant frogs. The tunnels in which the tribal goblins are living soon collapse due to the activity, granting the Dorgeshuun Council leadership of the city.
The capture of Senntisten Approximately 3,600 Zamorak's forces are finally able to capture the city of Senntisten. They exterminate the followers of Zaros and dwell in it themselves. Senntisten was, at this stage in the wars, the only surface settlement not in imminent danger of destruction.
The destruction of Senntisten Approximately 3,700 Saradominists destroy the city and build a new one, Saranthium, in its place. The old city was utterly levelled, as the Saradominist priests hated the idea that Zaros ever existed.
Battle for the godsword Near the end of the third age. Continued in 169 of the Fifth Age Saradomin joins forces with Bandos and Armadyl to defeat Zamorakian forces. The battle is eventually moves inside a temple north of Trollheim mountain when Armadyl forces retreated there from Zamorakian forces. Saradomin and Bandos forces rushed inside a temple to aid aviansie. However, eventually, forces of all 4 gods turn against each other. In the hassle, Nex is freed and it took the combined forces of all 4 gods to contain her and her army again. Eventually, a mighty spell freezes the entire dungeon where they remained frozen until the year 169 of the Fifth Age.
Awakening of Guthix Approximately 4,000 The God Wars reach their peak. The war becomes so cataclysmic that the world itself begins to die. Guthix, still sleeping in the depths of the earth, hears the world's dying cries, and is awakened. Guthix travels to the surface of the world, where he immediately demands that the fighting end and the gods leave Gielinor forever.
The Edicts of Guthix Approximately 4,000 Guthix, seeing the destruction wrought upon Gielinor, lays down a sacred set of laws that prevent the gods from directly interacting with the world. These Edicts of Guthix also state that no attacks with the potential of becoming a second God War can be launched. Guthix states that, should another God War begin, he will destroy the world and all upon it.
Guthix Laments Approximately 4,000 Guthix, the Wars now over, descends back into the depths of the earth. As he travels beneath the remains of the ancient Myriad civilization, he weeps within a cave, the horrors unleashed upon his world too much for him to bear. So great is his sorrow that the rocks themselves begin to weep with him. Realising this, he places a guardian within the cave, and then continues his travels. It is during this time that Guthix also hides the Fist of Guthix, a mysterious source of immense magical energy, within an underground cavern in the Wilderness, though its precise origins and his reasons for doing so is widely debated even among his own followers to this day.

Fourth Age

The Fourth Age is also known as the Age of Mortals. During this time the surviving races began to rebuild and flourish amongst the world. Heroes from this age include Arrav and Camorra, both of whom have a statue in the Heroes' Guild.

Destruction of "Old Asgarnia" 1500-1700 approx The city of Falador was presumably destroyed in this time and Asgarnia laid to waste. This is not proven, but as the Varrock museum shows Asgarnia in a map made in the mid Fourth Age while also claiming Falador was founded in year 7 of the Fifth Age, this is the logical conclusion.
The rise of the Consortium 1650 approx After the death of King Alvis, Keldagrim was taken over by the consortium, beginning the Dwarven Era of Prosperity, and hailing the city's rapid growth and development.
Renaming of Avarrocka Mid-late Fourth Age Avarrocka was renamed Varrock, presumably to celebrate a historic event.

The towns of Canifis and Port Phasmatys, as well as Fenkenstrain's Castle were built in this period. All of them -with the exception of the people in Port Phasmatys- were either slaughtered by or forced to pay Blood tithes by Lord Lowerniel Vergidiyad Drakan.

Fifth Age

The Fifth Age is the current age of RuneScape. The Fifth Age has thus far been a time of amazing strides for the human race, granting many humans dominance throughout central Gielinor largely due to the discovery of runes at the end of the Fourth Age. Positive advances in humanity's lifestyle include military, technological, theological, philosophical, political, and economic strides. The Fifth Age, as a result, has been referred to by some as the "Age of Humans".

The Runecrafting Crusades 42-62 During this time barbarians of the north felt that the creation of runes should be left to the gods. In an attempt to make this happen barbarians launched a brutal campaign across northern Kandarin and Asgarnia. These barbarians had sympathisers from the kingdom of Misthalin, and, during the year 47, they destroyed the Mage Training Arena. By year 62 the barbarians' forces were wavering, and so they settled west of Varrock with the intention of re-grouping and continuing their mission. After the burning, public outrage followed in Varrock which eventually lead to the discovery of the Dagon'hai's plans in the Tunnel of Chaos. Secrets of runecrafting were forgotten to most humans for nearly a century. The Moon Clan, however, retained runecrafting skills, although they used Lunar Magicks instead of standard magic.
