A Bolt rack is the form of ammunition used exclusively by Karil's crossbow. Bolt racks can be found by opening chests in the Barrows, buying from Ak-Haranu on the Port Phasmatys docks for 420 coins each, or they can be bought from another player. The price of bolt racks is variable on the Grand Exchange so buying them from Ak-Haranu is sometimes cheaper. Used bolt racks cannot be picked up which makes them more costly than they may originally seem. One bolt rack is used per shot, despite the fact that it is a rack. However, it could be that there is one bolt rack, but the bolts inside of it are being used per shot.

Bolt racks are between iron bolts (+46 ranged strength) and steel bolts (+64 ranged strength). However, since Karil's crossbow is about as accurate as a rune crossbow, but faster, the damage per second is roughly equivalent to a rune crossbow with rune bolts.

DPS Comparison Calculations - Karil's Crossbow vs Rune Crossbow:
Rune Crossbow firing 10 bolts will take 36 seconds on average.

In that same 36 seconds Karil's crossbow will fire 15 bolts.

With a reasonable Range Level of 80 and no additional modifiers, the max hits are:
Rune Bolt = ~252dmg
Bolt Rack = ~169dmg
We can easily find the DPS.
For Rune Crossbow using Runite Bolts:

For Karil's Bow using Bolt Racks:

Conclusion: If using the accurate style, Karil's Bow using Bolt Racks have a slightly higher DPS compared to the Rune Crossbow with Runite Bolts by a mere . However be aware this calculation does NOT include how more accurate the Rune Crossbow is compared to the Karil's Bow. It also does NOT account for rounding errors for calculating the max damage per ammo type.

If using rapid, then Karil's bow will fire every 1.8 seconds(3 game ticks), and the rune cbow every 3.0(5 game ticks) seconds. So for every 3 shots the rune cbow makes the karil bow would have made 5 shots in 9 seconds.

Runite bolt max=252, In 9 seconds, it'd fire 3 times. Three shots could hit 252(per shot)x3(attacks)=756 damage. Over 9 seconds which would be 84 potental damage a sec if you always hit maxes, but most of the time it'd average out to 42 assuming you never missed/absorption since of low hits.

Karil's cbow would have fired 5 times in 9 seconds and each hit could do 169 damage or 845 damage in total over 9 seconds or 93.88 potentially hitting maxes each time, but 46.94 averaged out.

Conclusion: If using rapid styles then the Karil Cbow can deal more potential damage, however it's much more expensive to use and rune crossbows are generally used with broad bolts and also has a bit less accuracy.
