Karil the Tainted is the fourth oldest of the seven Barrows brothers. He attacks using a repeating crossbow which uses special ammo called bolt racks which cannot be retrieved by a player using them. Although his crossbow is apparently set to the "accurate" style, Karil is still considered one of the more dangerous Barrows. He can hit up to 207 with incredible accuracy, and faster than the other brothers (same speed as any dagger or scimitar). His special isn't the most deadly as it only drains Agility by 20% of the level that you have which isn't too crippling, unless you are required to run long distances to a bank or are just about to enter the tunnels. He is weak against slash attacks.

Some players prefer to Melee Karil using the 4 dragon dagger special attacks (8 hits) then switching to an abyssal whip or some other powerful dragon weapon while using Protect from Missiles Prayer. One could also try using a Bandos godsword while using attack and strength prayers to help lower Karil's defence.

Lower defence players (such as 1 defence pures) who don't use prayer against Karil have noticed he can hit multiple 200's at high speed and rate - which can be deadly if this occurs multiple times in a row and the player is not able to eat fast enough. So protect/deflect Missile is strongly recommended to prevent it; however his special attack can still drain your agility. If you have 80+ Defence and Defence range bonus of at least 300, then you can try it without prayer, but watch your life points if doing so.

During the Morytania-Misthalin wars, the Barrows brothers were devastating the Undead armies, cutting through their lines with ease. Karil was known for his secrecy and accuracy in battle; "Should any enemy manage to survive long enough, and have the chance to strike a blow, Karil would fire a swathe of bolts to pepper their chest as they took their swing, throwing them back, " this is a quote taken from The Fall of Six under the Lores section of Runescape.

NOTE: If you are done with barrows and you are going to train agility, check to make sure that your stat has actually restored. Not doing so may result in unnecessary frustration from failed obstacles or shortcuts.

Trivia

• Karil, along with all the other barrows brothers, received a graphical update on 4 January 2012 to make him look more like a player wearing his items rather than the old graphics style which displayed an unclear, purely pink coloured apparition. Along with this, his combat level was increased from 98 to 121.
• The skirt Karil wears seems to resemble Verac's skirt more than the skirt that players are able to wear.
• Although Karil uses range, he can do more damage to players with melee armour than Ahrim can, even though Ahrim uses battle magic. This is because Ahrim also uses his high-level curse spells on the player and occasionaly uses his Fire Wave, unlike Karil, who just has a basic ranged attack.
• Despite being a ranger and using his own armor (which would have high magic defense), he can be hit extremely often with magic attacks. This would suggest that he would have a low magic level, or may be an oversight from Jagex.
• Karil's crossbow seems to be based off the real life Chu-ke nu, an ancient Chinese crossbow that used a rapid fire system. If this is true, this could also explain why Ak-Haranu sells the required bolt racks, as he is from the Eastern Lands and the Eastern Lands seem to be based on the ancient/medieval Far East. This supports the idea that Sliske, who gave the Barrow Brothers their armour, obtained them from the Eastern Lands.
• Karil's crossbow is the only crossbow in the game that is 2-handed.
• Karil's crossbow is more like a shortbow in terms of attack power and attack speed; this is also reinforced by the fact it is 2 handed.
• In "The Fall of Six", Karil is depicted as being the fastest of the brothers, which is held true by the fact that Karil's Crossbow is much faster than any of the standard metal crossbows.
• In the wallpaper, Karil, along with Guthan and Ahrim, hold their weapons in one hand although all Barrows weapons are two-handed.
