The Third-age mage hat is a member's only piece of armour that is part of the Third-age mage set. To wear the mage hat the player needs at least 30 Defence and 65 Magic. To obtain a Third-age mage hat the player can either receive one from a level 3 Treasure trail , buy it on the GE, or buy from another player.
The hat is currently tied with the Ectohood as the sixth best mage item worn in the headwear slot in the game, beaten by the Runic hood, Spiritbloom hood, Celestial hood, Zuriel's Hood, and Virtus Mask. However, it is tied for the second best mage headwear in Gielinor, offering the same Magic attack and defence bonuses as Zuriel's hood (which is however degradable).
It was long thought that the chance of obtaining a piece of third-age armour was about 1 in 10,000 (according to Paul Gower); it was revealed that the odds are between 1 in 100,000 and 1 in 1,000,000.<ref>Mod Maylea.
