Charms are items used in the Summoning skill as a requirement to create Summoning pouches. They are obtained primarily as drops from any of hundreds of different monsters. Charms are usually dropped independently from the monster drop list. Most of the time, they are dropped one at a time, making them slow to collect; however, some stronger monsters can drop multiple charms at once.

Other methods of obtaining charms include stealing them from chests in Dorgesh-Kaan (at Thieving level 52), looting them from a Spirit impling (at Hunter level 54), receiving them as a reward from fire spirits, getting them from Charm Sprites, receiving them from a random event gift, or buying them from Soul Wars using zeal points.

Charms cannot be traded between players, either directly or through the Grand Exchange, but it is possible to sell charms to the Smuggler inside Daemonheim.

Types

There are several different charm types:

Ordinary charms

There are four types of ordinary charms, all of which are stackable:

Special charms

Special charms are not stackable, and are used as a tertiary ingredient in several Summoning familiars. Like ordinary charms, they are not tradeable.

Obtaining charms

This section is designed to aid in deciding what to attack while trying to obtain as many charms as possible. The sections are divided not based on combat, but the advantage of the level of the skill the player is using, their Constitution, their Defence, and their Prayer on the higher numbers. Players can also use Summoning if they are fighting monsters in a multi-combat zone.

This requires the completion of What Lies Below and Chaos Tunnels: The Hunt for Surok. Upon completion of the Elite Varrock Tasks his charm drops will be doubled.

Gold, green, crimson and blue charms

275 gold charms are part of the reward for the Wolf Whistle quest.

With a few exceptions, monsters will only drop one charm at a time.

Note that currently all of the monsters which drop multiple charms (excluding Bork, of course) drop the same amount of each charm, thus looking at any one of the columns of a monster will suffice to know the number of charms it drops for all the colours.

Bork

Bork and his Ork legions are the only monsters with a 100% drop rate of charms. Bork will always drop 2 Green, 7 Crimson, and 5 Blue charms. Wearing a Ring of wealth adds 3 crimson and 1 green to the base total, and completing all of the Varrock Tasks leads to the base charm drop being doubled. However he can be fought only once a day. The legions will each drop one Gold, Green, Crimson, or Blue charm.

Relative Experience Value

An analysis of the experience available from each of the four main charm types shows the relative value of each. If we consider gold charms to be of value 1, green charms average to 1.33 gold charms, crimson charms average to 3.36 gold charms and Blue charms average to 6.83 gold charms. This analysis ignored pouches that required non-tradeable secondary components.

Drop rates

The table below shows the approximate drop chance of a charm from a large selection of monsters. For example: a monster with a 50% Blue Charm drop rate will, on average, yield Blue Charms every other kill. This list is by no means inclusive of all charm droppers.

Information rarely reflects the information gathered by one person killing a particular monster type, but instead combines averages of two or more players each killing 50 or more and then extrapolating based on those numbers.

Note that the sum of all the drop chances for one monster can be less than 100% because a charm is not always dropped. The only monster to have a 100% drop rate on charms is Bork.
