Examine | A maul used to claim life from those who don't deserve it. (Tier 11) |
Weight | 4.9 kg |
The primal maul is the most powerful weapon in RuneScape. It is a members-only Dungeoneering weapon that can only be found in Daemonheim and is only dropped by Rammernaut on floor 18 or higher. It is the only primal weapon with a Strength level requirement, requiring a Strength level of 99 to wield, and an unofficial requirement of 35 Dungeoneering to encounter the Rammernaut.
It has the third highest crush bonus of any known weapon in the game (behind the sacred clay warhammer class 4 and class 5 in Stealing Creation) and currently maintains the highest strength bonus of any weapon. Like all primal weapons, this weapon lacks a special attack.
Being a Dungeoneering weapon, it cannot be used outside of the Dungeoneering skill.
The Primal maul is a common weapon-bind for high level member dungeoneers, along with Promethium 2h and Primal 2h, due to its capability to hit very high damage with high accuracy.
With this weapon, a strong melee potion, a tier 10 Berserker ring, primal boots, primal gauntlets, a blood necklace, and a maxed Turmoil, the highest hit possible is 843 damage.

Mauls vs 2h Swords
There has been much debate on which weapon is more powerful in Dungeoneering. The primal maul, being the strongest and (practically) most accurate melee weapon in the world of Runescape, seemed like a natural choice for anyone to bind. However, the maul lacks the ability to perform slashing attacks. While monsters like skeletons, spiders, forgotten warriors, mysterious shades and brutes are weak to crush attacks of the maul, other monsters like zombies, forgotten mages, forgotten rangers, and many bosses are resistant against it. A 2h sword has the ability to perform slash and crush attacks in aggressive style(therefore, it may worth the only 4 less strength bonus when compared to primal maul). While one may argue that the immensely high accuracy of the maul should override anything, this is not true. This is because a normal monster like a forgotten mage easily has over 150+ crush defence, virtually negating the primal maul's accuracy to having only 30+ crush attack or less. Therefore, being able to choose between various styles of attacks is always more beneficial in Daemonheim rather than being restricted to only one style. Mauls require a Strength level rather than an Attack level, and most players have higher Strength than Attack, it might be better to bind a maul if you cannot use an equivalent 2h sword. For example, for a player with 80 Attack and 99 Strength, might want to bind a Primal maul over a Gorgonite 2h sword. Another reason for players to do this is that lower tiered 2h swords can be smithed with the required smithing level while the primal maul can only be received as a drop.

Trivia
- When bound the Primal maul loses the (Tier 11) at the end of the examine info.
- Although the Primal maul is the strongest weapon in Dungeoneering, most players prefer to bind the Primal/Promethium 2h sword in conjunction with the melee class rings or the Primal/Promethium spear, as the Primal maul only has one attack style compared to the Primal/Promethium 2h's slash and crush styles, as forgotten mages have less than half the slash defence as crush defence, and the spear's versatility of attack styles and ability to be poisoned.
- The maul gives a -4 bonus to slash and stab attacks but it is impossible to use these styles of attack with this weapon, therefore the -4 bonus has essentially no effect.
- The picture of the Primal Maul is used in the skill guide (At level 120 dungeoneering) to show that 4 items can be bound.
