Turmoil is a prayer in the Ancient Curses prayer book, which is unlocked after completing The Temple at Senntisten. Requiring 95 Prayer to activate, Turmoil has the highest Prayer requirement of all prayers in the game. It can boost the user's Attack, Strength, and Defence significantly when in combat against powerful opponents, making it the strongest melee-boosting prayer in the game.
Boosts
Turmoil offers a base 15% bonus to Attack and Defence, and a base 23% bonus to Strength; these boosts are always applied when Turmoil is active. However, once the user enters combat with an opponent, additional boosts are applied that are calculated based on the user's levels and the opponent's levels.<ref>Obliv. Notes
- Many high-level monsters (especially boss monsters) would most likely have greater than 99 Attack/Strength/Defence. Turmoil treats such levels as level 99 for the purpose of calculating the additional bonuses.
- When in combat against multiple opponents, Turmoil calculates its additional bonuses according to the strongest opponent's levels.
- This formula can be used to roughly determine a monster's levels in Attack, Strength or Defence (unless they are above level 99, as noted above). For example, a player who activates Turmoil while fighting a living rock creature will notice that Turmoil does not boost Defence beyond the initial +15% bonus; this suggests that living rock creatures have 1 Defence, or close to 1 Defence.
Limitations
Turmoil's primary limitations are its high Prayer requirement, that it cannot be used alongside any Sap Curses or Leech Curses, and that its usefulness is limited against opponents that do not use melee. Because some monsters only use Magic and/or Ranged, they are treated as having Attack and Strength levels of 1. Therefore, Turmoil will not offer its additional boost to Attack and Strength against such opponents, although Defence will receive its boost as normal. Some examples of popular monsters that do not use melee are aquanites, waterfiends, spiritual mages, aberrant spectres, Dagannoth Supreme, Dagannoth Prime, and the Phoenix.
Turmoil and Piety
Turmoil is noteworthy for being the "strongest" prayer in the game in terms of melee boosts. It is comparable to Piety, although the two differ in a number of ways. Piety requires completion of the Knight Waves Training Grounds activity, 70 prayer and 70 Defence. Turmoil requires completion of The Temple at Senntisten, and 95 prayer. Piety is a prayer, and Turmoil is a curse. As such, you can not access useful curses while using Piety, nor useful prayers while using Turmoil. Piety's bonuses are constant and independent of the user's opponents in combat, if any. Piety also gives a higher base bonus to Attack and Defence. As such, Piety is ideal for offensive prayer flashing. After at least one hit with Turmoil active, the user will gain an additional boost of approximately 15% of the opponent's Attack/Defence level, and 10% of the opponent's Strength level, which usually results in stronger bonuses than Piety (this depends on the user's and opponent's levels). Additionally, Turmoil's drain rate (10 point per 2 seconds) is one-third slower than Piety's (10 point per 1.5 seconds). This makes Turmoil ideal for fast paced combat against high level opponents.
Advantages of Piety are:
- Much easier to get.
- More effective for prayer flashing.
- Allows use of other prayers.
Advantages of Turmoil are:
- More powerful against higher level opponents.
- Slower Prayer point drain.
- Allows use of other curses.
Trivia
- It is a misconception that Turmoil can boost up to 29%/32%/29%. This is true for a player who has level 99 in Attack, Strength, and Defence. However, due to the way Turmoil's boost is calculated, the percentages can be higher than this if used by a player who has a lower level in Attack, Strength, or Defence. Theoretically, a player with 1 Attack/Strength/Defence will receive a 1415%/923%/1415% boost from Turmoil when fighting a player with level 99 Attack/Strength/Defence; however, this would still only give 13 levels to Attack and Defence and 8 levels to Strength.
- Upon the release of the Ancient Curses, some players experienced a glitch that caused the maximum Defence bonus from Turmoil to be +31% instead of +29%.
- Additionally, the Game Guide incorrectly stated that Turmoil cannot be active alongside a deflection curse, Wrath, or Soul Split. This has since been corrected.
- Turmoil is one of the few prayers to have an animation upon activation, the other being berserker and protect item on the same prayer book.
- Switching from Ancient Curses to normal prayers on the White Knights' Castle altar, while using Turmoil, is an elite Falador task.
- The only known NPCs to use Turmoil in combat are Nex, the leader of Zaros' forces in the God Wars Dungeon, and Kal'Ger the Warmonger, a Dungeoneering boss.
- According to the ancient hymnal, Turmoil's verbal incantation is "Vim inimici mihi bono inclina." (Turn the power of my enemy to my benefit.)
