The Mysterious shade is a monster found in Daemonheim. It was released along with the Dungeoneering skill. It can be encountered in any room and also features in the monolith puzzle.

Ranged attack.
Magic attack.

It is one of the most powerful types of foes in Daemonheim, and can easily kill a player. It uses a mixture of Magic (blue-coloured) and Magical Ranged (yellow-coloured) attacks, which is powered evenly. Care should be taken when engaging the higher level variants, as these use their attacks with a high accuracy and max hit; they have very low defence towards all attack styles, particularly slash, to compensate. Their accuracy can be seen from the fact that the level 25 version can deal damage frequently (almost a 100% chance of hitting, to most level 30-50 players) to most mid-level players. It is recommended to wear Range armour to block its attacks, and unless it has a significantly lower combat level than the other monsters in the room, it is generally best to kill it first. For using prayer against exceptionally strong shades, either use Protect from Ranged or Protect from Magic or their respective Curse equivalents. Ranged armour offers the best overall defence against their attacks, and is best used in tandem with Protect from/Deflect Ranged. If there is a single shade in a room (as there often is if soloing), it is almost always about as strong as the player and is likely to exhaust a player's food/prayer quickly if they have low magic/range defence bonuses. Higher levels can hit higher so those with low crafting or have no money to buy higher tiered ranged armour will die faster.

There is a sort of warning for each attack; the shade will surround itself with a blue aura before its magic attack, and a yellow aura before its ranged attack.

This is one of the monsters within Daemonheim that will switch targets when in a multi-combat area, instead of continuing to attack the first player it sees. Thus if a group encounters a high level shade and one happens to get attacked, the shade will change target and during this time, the latter can have time to heal or run away.

In a Monolith puzzle room however, the shades which appear tend to concentrate only on which player attacks them first, however if they kill a player they will become aggressive to all the other players in the room and attack each of them randomly.

Trivia

The ghost believed to be one of the Mysterious Shades
  • The Mysterious Shades look similar like Echned Zekin, the 'captured' form of the demon Nezikchened, which the player has to fight during the Legend's Quest.
  • Mysterious shades do count for slayer if a player is given a task of shades.
  • A Room with 2 or more Mysterious Shades in it, with a decent combat level, can easily take down a player.
  • There's a ghost wandering on the north shore of Daemonheim that looks like a Mysterious Shade.
  • When receiving damage or dying, mysterious shades used to sound identical to the Shadows in the Temple of Light, but this was later changed.
