Smite was the highest level prayer until the July 2007 introduction of Chivalry and Piety. When active, attacking another player will cause 1/4 of the damage done to be drained from his or her Prayer points. Smite is a popular prayer among player killers because it is used to prevent their opponent from using the Protect Items prayer, as well as protection prayers. Smite is comparable to the Ancient Curse, Soul Split, however Soul Split requires 92 prayer. Smite's effect on prayer draining is slightly higher than Soul Split (which drains 1/5), but Soul Split has the ability to heal the user also.
Trivia
- Sometimes, during the Pay to Pk Riot (and similar riots), rioters would use this prayer or Retribution to show they didn't support Jagex, while other players would use the Redemption prayer to show they did support Jagex.
- Shortly after the prayer update on 25 March 2009, free players could use this prayer. The glitch is now fixed.
- Players in the Stealing Creation waiting area will often line up against the barrier and use this prayer to show they are in the blue team; red team players use Retribution, which has a very similar icon other than that it is red.
- In 2011 the info was changed around the time of the Wilderness Referendum when the mouse is hovering over the prayer, it now reads, "Opponent's Prayer stat is drained according to how much damage is done" instead of "1/4 of damage done is removed from opponent's prayer".
