This article is about the commonly found human NPC. For other types, see Guard (disambiguation).
[view][talk]

There are many Guards in RuneScape, usually in populated, major cities, such as Falador, Varrock, and Ardougne. Guards also patrol the area of just south of the Wilderness Wall at Edgeville. There are also Guards at the mansion in the quest Rat Catchers and the second level of the Port Sarim Jail.

They are often killed for training due to their proximity to banks, common drop of 3 grapes and the rare drop of Clue scroll (medium).

Weapons and armour

Guards in Edgeville and the Seers' Village Courthouse wear some sort of leather armour that bears a resemblance to that of the Lumbridge Guardsmen, except that Lumbridge guards wear blue uniforms, and Edgeville guards wear green uniforms. Edgeville Guards are level 21 and attackable. However, their Lumbridge and courthouse counterparts are unattackable NPCs except for 2 Lumbridge Guards (One at the goblins, and another at the Giant Rats at the back of Lumbridge Castle).

Guards in Varrock wear a golden/yellow version of the Renegade Knights uniform. They are Level 21, and they attack with Melee. Until 2007, Varrock guards were identical to Falador guards.

All guards in Falador wear an Iron chainbody (or Steel chainbody), Bronze medium helmet (or a Steel medium helmet), and a Steel square shield as armour. These guards wear no extra leg protection.

The level 19 and 21 guards in Falador wield Bronze battleaxes and Bronze swords, respectively. The level 22 guards in Falador wield Longbows and Crossbows instead of a sword and may wear Hard leather armour or Studded leather armour in the place of an iron chainbody, along with Bronze medium helmet. Also, you cannot roleplay a guard now.

The level 20 guards of Ardougne wield a steel mace, iron chainbody, and a helmet that looks like a Spiny helm without spikes. They also wear red pants, and blue shirts under chainmail.

The level 21 guards in Port Sarim Jail wear Hardleather body, and attack with melee. The guard wielding a Longbow is an unattackable NPC found on the rooftop of the jail.

Other guards include the ones found near Sinclair Mansion, who are unattackable NPCs wearing steel medium helms and steel chainbodies.

Thieving

Guards can be pickpocketed at level 40 with Thieving, giving 46.5 experience and 30-34 Coins. If unsuccessful, the player will be hit for twenty life points and stunned for five seconds. A good place to pickpocket those is at Ardougne market, stealing from Baker's stalls for food. If someone kills the guard just as you are pickpocketing you will get the message "Too late; they are dead" and you will receive neither experience nor loot.

You can get up to 60 coins per pickpocket after finishing the Lost Her Marbles caper.

Burthorpe guards cannot be pickpocketed.

Respawn

Most guards respawn approximately 50–55 seconds after their bodies disappear on the ground. This is a relatively long time for people who are power training their combat skills; it is advised that players seeking to raise those skills quickly by killing guards find an area with at least four guards, so as to always be able to fight at least one. Some areas good for this are the lobby of Varrock Palace which spawns 6 guards, and the northern entrance to Falador which spawns 5 guards, although are often populated by other players.

Trivia

  • There are some guards that use Bronze c'bow with Iron bolts (Bronze c'bow can only use bronze ammunition).
  • The Ardougne guard, after killing for a Level 2 Clue scroll will drop the Key before disappearing.
  • When worldwide PKing was allowed in RuneScape Classic, guards used to stay in key cities and break up PKers by attacking the aggressor.
  • In the Garden of Tranquillity quest, the player overhears a guard telling one of his colleagues that the life expectancy of a guard is 30 seconds (they are then killed by PKMaster0036).
  • The crossbow wielding guard near the Falador west bank, fires his crossbow like Karil.
  • When fighting Guards at the Varrock East Gate, if the workman walks by while you're killing a guard, the guard yells "I'M BEING SLAUGHTERED!" The workman will then comment "Nothing new here".
  • Also, when all the Varrock guards at eastern gate are dead, when the workman walks by, he will say "Oh, they're all dead."
  • Varrockian Guards, when killed, fall off very fast while the Edgeville Guards fall off very slow. However, Faladorian Guards fall off at the normal speed.
  • It is almost possible to imitate guards, but the pattern on the guard's bronze helm is different than a regular bronze med helm.
  • Before the Varrock update, in Falador the Guards appear to be wearing a red trimmed bronze helmet.
  • If you attack a Falador Guard armed with a bow, he will fire arrows at you; but if he attacks your familiar, he will punch the familiar, rather than ranging it.
  • Sometimes when discovered stealing from stalls in Ardougne, the guard will move backwards.
  • In a section of Falador, the guards can be multi-combated. The guards in Varrock cannot.
  • The guards in Falador are one of the few monsters that have not been visually changed or altered since the release of RuneScape in 2001. The uniform they wore in 2001 was carried over from the one wore by all guards in RuneScape Classic; a Bronze Medium helmet and Iron chainbody.
  • Every time you pickpocket a guard in Varrock, a count is added to the signpost in front of the palace entrance.
  • Some guards' armour, such as the Falador and Port Sarim jail guards, can be completely mimicked by players, while other guards, such as Varrock guards, have unique costumes currently unavailable to players.
  • The unattackable guard on the top floor of the Port Sarim Jail, if spoken to correctly, will start an amusing conversation.

  • Guards often drop grapes; this could be a historical reference as they were paid in wine which comes from fermented grape juice.
  • Guards armour has not been updated with the March 6, 2012 armour update.
