Curse is a spell which lowers an opponent's Defence by 5%. The spell gives experience whether it hits or misses, making it a popular way to raise experience cheaply. It is often used with a Mystic mud staff or Mud battlestaff because it gives unlimited Water runes and Earth runes. When using one piece of Sacred Clay armour while training with Curse, each spell gives 58 experience points. Wearing one piece of the set will last 515 casts, 2 pieces will last 1030 casts, 3 pieces will last 1545 casts, and 4 pieces (though not recommended because you won't be able to wield an elemental staff) will last 2060 casts.
Remember, you cannot use Ancient Magicks or Lunar Spells if you are using standard spells.

Failed cursing
Casting Curse while wearing full metal armour has a good chance of casting a "splash," or a missed hit. This provides very cheap magic experience, as players can instantly recast the spell on the same target. Additionally, casting Curse grants players no experience in the Constitution skill and, thus, is useful to pures who wish to not gain Constitution experience and want to stay at a certain Constitution level.
The usual method is to buy the body runes and one of the other runes and use a staff for the third. A Mud Staff is an expensive alternative that replaces water runes and earth runes. A Mud battlestaff costs Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character "[". coins, and a Mystic mud staff costs Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character "[". coins. The highest magic bonus you can have and still guarantee a splash is -65.
When doing this method, it is helpful to position a monster so that it is just on the edge of your screen, so that there is minimal distance between it and your spellbook.
Popular targets are:
- The Monk of Zamorak under the stairs in Varrock castle
- Ducks at Lumbridge
- Scorpions at the Al-Kharid mine, from the rim
- Port Sarim jail inmates
- East Ardougne at the zoo
- Zombies across the stream in the Varrock Sewers
- The hobgoblins and cows near the Crafting Guild
- The caged lesser demon in the wizard's tower
- Wizard Frumscone's zombies in the Magic Guild
- Rats outside of Lumbridge Castle
- Rams North of the Monastery (hop across ditch)
- Lesser Demons, casting from the safe spot
- Warped Cockroaches in the catacombs in Lumbridge
- Skeletons in the low level Wilderness (from the other side of the wall)
There are a few other places where you can find useful targets that may be trapped, or low levels that can be cursed a couple of times and then killed. Members also have the choice of finding a "Mud Staff Partner." Both people go to the Al-Kharid Duel Arena wearing the best dragonhide they can wear and cast Curse. This ensures Curse's failure and a reliable target for both partners.
Trivia
- Aubury and various other NPCs that teleport you to the Rune essence mine seem to use a version of this spell, although your Defence stat will not be weakened.
- The Magic dummy in Lumbridge used to be the most popular targets for failed cursing. Due to an update attempting to curse the magic dummy generates the message 'You can't weaken that'.
- This is the only low level curse you can use that effects Ranged and Magic.
