Zombie Outbreak
The Zombie Outbreak is an official event released by Jagex with the Reports of Strange activity at Clan Wars update.<ref name="update">Jagex Emergency Broadcast System. "Reports of Strange activity at Clan Wars". 22 October 2010. RuneScape News. *</ref> The event started on the 25th and ended on the 31st of October. It was on at the same time as the 2010 Hallowe'en event.
During the event, zombies and "Infected Jagex Moderators" will randomly appear in the Clan Wars free-for-all portal. The event is on all worlds. as the event progresses, more and more Jagex Moderators will become "infected" which will increase the amount of zombies in each wave outbreak.<ref name="update"></ref>
Alpha Base Program
A program was created by Jagex called Alpha Base Program.<ref name="forum">Mod Crow. "Alpha Base Program". 22 October 2010. Events Forums. *</ref> Three Alpha Base Program gatherings were held over the duration of the event. at each gathering players could join together with the surviving Jagex Moderators and fellow zombie hunters to learn zombie survival techniques, as well as go hunting with a larger group.
The three gatherings were on:
- Monday 25 October - 10:01pm UTC
- Thursday 28 October - 10am UTC
- Sunday 31 October - 7pm UTC
All Alpha Bases were held at the Jolly Boar Inn in world 30.
The event
In the event the player can do 3 tasks:
-
1. Kill Zombies
-
2. Protect an uninfected Jagex Moderator from being Infected
-
3.Kill an Infected Jagex Moderator
Zombie hunting
Many players are hunting the zombies in the hopes of killing a Jagex Moderator or just for the fun of it. The most commonly taken approach is to join one of the 20 Jagex Clan Chats. This makes finding the outbreaks much easier as a Jagex Moderator will pop in every now and then to warn players of an incoming attack, giving them time to prepare. Each chat is maintained by a player Moderator.

Jagex Moderators
From what is said on the Update page and forum thread, it is believed that Jagex Moderators can be killed and infected by the zombies.<ref name="forum"></ref> Once killed in battle, a Jagex Moderator turns into an infected Jagex Moderator who will bolster the enemy numbers as well as being a formidable fighting force themselves. Currently there are seventeen infected Jagex Moderators with sixteen uninfected. Jagex Moderators will remain safe during the outbreak but will be attacked by an infected Mod once all the zombies are killed. The Jagex Moderator must kill the infected Moderator or become infected themselves.

Trivia
- The zombies randomly shout phrases in unison, such as "Brains!" or "Cabbage...".
- When all the players entered the free for all portal in 31 October 2010 there was a 30 minute delay causing players to leave.
- Many RuneScape players used many items on Infected Jagex Mods and other zombies in hope of finding a "cure" and uninfect them. However, there was no cure. The Forums were flooded with people saying which "cures" didn't work.
