The Wizard's mind bomb, also known as the WMB, is a drink which temporarily boosts a player's Magic level. It also has a seriously negative effect on the player's melee combat skills. It can be purchased at several locations including:

Brewing

The full recipe for the Wizards mind bomb is as follows (INGREDIENTS MUST BE USED IN THE ORDER GIVEN):

  1. 2 Buckets of Water
  2. 2 Barley Malt.
  3. (optional) 1 "The Stuff," to increase chance of maturity.
  4. 4 Yanillian hops
  5. 1 Ale Yeast
  6. Wait two to five days
  7. Collect the completed ale using eight Beer Glasses or two Calquat Kegs*.

* Calquat kegs are highly recommended, especially if the ale has matured. Simply by collecting the ale in a keg, the value of the batch will increase by several thousand gp.This ale is considerably more useful in a keg, as it stacks 4 doses into one inventory slot.

The Mature wizards mind bomb, which is the stronger player made version of the ale which gives even higher stat boosts.

Effects

  • Increases Magic level by 2 (under level 50) or 3 (above level 50) for up to one minute.
  • Lowers Attack by 4
  • Lowers Strength and Defence by 3

The boost to the player's Magic level is different depending on the players level. The player will receive a +2 boost if they are level 49 or below, or a +3 boost if they are level 50 or above. The boosted magic level can be applied to extra damage calculation, increasing 3% for every increased magic level, to maximum of 9%. This makes it the only drink in F2P to enhance magic damage.

It is very important for members to note that a simple magic potion at four doses gives a +5 magic boost. This is greater than both a Wizard's Mind Bomb and its matured version. It is also relatively cheap at around 2,000 gp in the Grand Exchange.

Combat applications

It is not advised that players attempt to rely on this item to unlock a higher level spell as the player's main combat strategy. This strategy has its flaws not only in the compounding negative effects of the ale on defence, but also that the boost tends to run out at very inconvenient times, especially in PVP situations. It is, however, effective to open with this strategy to get a few strong hits in (and hopefully surprise your opponent) until it wears off, then switch back to whatever spells are the best the player can normally do.

The Wizard's mind bomb is often heavily relied on to cast teleport block at level 82 magic. This technique can save a player a fairly large amount of time, money, and runes that would have otherwise been spent training. Many pkers also use this item to cast the lunar spell vengeance and Vengeance other when underlevel, allowing these spells to be used at level 91 and 90 magic respectively.

Drinking the Wizard's mind bomb when fighting against another mage is better because the mind bomb decreases defence and only 30% of your Defence level is used and 70% of your Magic level is used.

Non-combat Applications

It is much more useful to use this item to enable other non-combat related spells to use earlier than otherwise possible. This is especially useful for jewellery enchanting or High Alchemy. But, unless the player is very quick, the number of items the player can process on a single drink will be quite low, so players may need to acquire a large number of these if they are planning to do this in larger quantity. Using this method, players can accelerate their Magic training by earning the higher experience of spells they would not normally be able to use.

Some players find it useful to use this item to enable the player to use telegrab at level 31 instead of level 33, and train magic across these few levels faster this way. Especially good for free-to-play mage pures, as the negative stat effects won't really make a difference in a players melee stats if they are already level 1.

Other uses

This item is widely used (and highly recommended) to get around the requirements to enter the Wizard's Guild in Yanille without actually having level 66 Magic. This is useful for various quests, for essence runners, and for players interested in accessing the specialty shops in the guild. The wizard's mind bomb can also be used to meet requirements for a large number of quests such as Dragon Slayer if you choose to use Telekinetic Grab the map piece instead of giving 10,000gp.

Trivia

  • The Wizards Mind Bomb may be a reference to the Sith Thought Bomb from Star Wars, although their purposes are very different - the Thought Bomb is a planet-destroying Force Attack used by Darth Bane in the ancient times of the Star Wars galaxy.
