Pompous merchants are rude merchants wandering around outside of The Pick and Lute pub in Taverley. They can be pickpocketed for coins, giving 8 Thieving experience per successful pickpocket and are directed to do so by Ruth Savage during the Troll Warzone tutorial. Players who fail to pickpocket them are stunned for a few seconds and lose 10 life points.
They are the same as men and women for pickpocketing, but do not have an "Attack" option, so there is no accidental attacking and other players can't kill your target.
There is currently a glitch that causes the pompous merchants to sometimes noclip through some rocks which are impassable for players. However, they never seem to wander off the map or stay in inaccessible areas, so this isn't a problem.
Failing to successfully pickpocket the merchants makes them shout "You oaf, begone!"
