Logout button
The Logout button is used to log out of RuneScape. The button is located on the side of the minimap, next to the summoning, prayer, and energy icons. The logout button is an X. Once it is clicked, the player must click another button to actually log out. That is a red bar reading either "Exit to Lobby" or "Exit to Login."
Players may click the logout button at any time, although players in combat must wait 10 seconds after done fighting in order for the button to actually log them out. It is also not possible to simply log out during a game of Castle Wars. The player must exit the game through a portal and then may log out. Also, if a player does nothing (i.e. not clicking or typing) for 5 minutes, the player is automatically logged out. The player will also be logged out if they have been playing for 6 hours straight, regardless of activity.
In Fist of Guthix, if the player logs out, the player forfeits the game, and loses 24 rating points.
Trivia
- The old logout button looked like a door.
- There was a glitch that causes all players that tried to use the Grand Exchange, whether to buy or to sell, once they clicked confirm offer, they would disconnect and then refresh back to the lobby.
- The logout button used to be the words "Log out". This was later changed.
- The logout button used to be located where the clan chat icon is now, as a picture of a door. This was later changed to make space for the Summoning icon that only members can see.
- In the Maze random event, you could not logout before finishing the maze. This was changed later.
- In the 'Behind the Scenes - January' news post, Jagex mentioned that the auto-logout time will be changed to 5 minutes instead of 90 seconds. The logout timer was changed from 90 seconds to 5 minutes on 13 January 2009.
- There was a glitch in Castle Wars if you tried to get out of your team's base portal as soon as the game started, you would automatically be logged out.
- You will be automatically logged out after 6 hours of continuous play. This is to stop someone who has hacked an account to stay on it, which helps the original owner recover it once they have changed their password. This can also stop bots, although most bots are advanced enough to re-login.
- It was stated in the news of 28 April 2010 that a fully log out button (instead of returning to the lobby) was added, but just after the update, it didn't appear. This was fixed 20 minutes later with another system update.
- There appears message "That player has left the server" if you try to for example trade or Challenge someone in duel arena but target logouts before player gets to him/her.
- In free-to-play, when you drink a potion and logout, the effects of the potion wears off. As for members, they do not.
