Onyx is a rare volcanic gem with a shiny black lustre which is used in the Crafting skill to make jewellery. As there are only a limited number of ways to obtain an onyx gem, it is by far the rarest gem in RuneScape.
An uncut onyx requires a Crafting level of 67 to cut, granting 167.5 Crafting experience when cut. Players may also use the Fletching skill to cut an onyx into onyx bolt tips by using a chisel on a cut onyx at level 73 Fletching. Cutting an onyx into bolt tips grants the player 9 experience in the Fletching skill and gives the player 24 onyx bolt tips. There are other, far cheaper and simpler ways to obtain onyx bolt tips, therefore this practice is NOT recommended due to the value of the gem.
The Personalised shops update on 2 September 2009 raised the price of an uncut onyx in the TzHaar shops ninefold, from 300,000 to 2,700,000 Tokkul. In addition to this, an update on 15 December 2009 made it impossible to obtain Tokkul by trading runes and other obsidian items to TzHaar shops. This significantly increased the rarity of Tokkul, causing the gem to greatly increase in price. The new update to the TzHaar city on 14 Feburary 2012 which added the new Fight Kiln, allows players to fight their way through 37 waves of monsters, similar to the fight caves. If the player is successful in defeating the boss, they have the choice of receiving either the TokHaar-Kal or an uncut onyx.

Trivia
- When the TzHaar area was first released, the store price for an uncut onyx was 300,000 Tokkul. Many players traded fire runes for 1 Tokkul each to buy an uncut onyx for a profit.
- In real life, the colour of onyx ranges from white to almost every colour, with shades of blue or purple.
- The amulet of fury has a red gem on the top of the amulet itself, and when crafting the amulet, the wool changes colour to match the amulet's.
- Visually, no gold can be seen on any onyx jewellery although they all require gold bars to be made.
- Contrary to popular belief, an onyx cannot be found while mining in the Lava Flow Mine or mining gem rocks.
- Following the return of free trade, the prices of the gem have significantly crashed.
- The Queen Black Dragon is the only monster to drop this gem although it is very rare.
