Examine text | An evil death spawn. |
Death spawns appear when players try to kill Nechryaels. When attacked, a Nechryael may summon up to two Death spawns to help attack the player.
Death spawns are demons, so the special abilities of Silverlight and Darklight affect them.
RuneScape partially treats combat with death spawns as a non-combat situation. The auto-retaliate setting has no effect against them; in other words, unless the Death spawn is manually clicked, a player will never fight back if attacked by one. To fight a Death spawn, the player must attack it directly (must right click it and click 'attack'). A player under attack by a Death spawn can even log out instead of needing to wait 10 seconds after combat. Random events can take a player away even while they're fighting a Death spawn. Also, the Lumbridge Home Teleport is not interrupted by death spawns. Despite all of this, however, the attack of a Death spawn can still interrupt conversation. Also, multiple death spawns and a Nechryael may attack a player at once even though it's single combat in the slayer tower, yet the player cannot attack a death spawn until the Nechryael is dead or combat with the Nechryael is disengaged as its single combat. The Abyssal Vine Whip special attack is incapable of hitting them.
A combat Familiar will not voluntarily attack a death spawn, even if the player is fighting it. The player, however, can order the familiar to attack a death spawn, and it will then attack the spawn like any foe it can fight.
A death spawn only exists for a limited amount of time after being summoned by the Nechryael. It fades away at the end of its time, even if engaged in combat with a player. Players could kill deaths spawns targeting another player, and they won't retaliate. They don't need 80 slayer to do so.
Sometimes death spawns would wander off instead of attacking the player slaying the nechryael. Another player attacking these would face their retaliation.
Death spawns make the same sounds as Vampyres when they attack and when they are hit.
When using a Guthan's set while fighting Nechryael, Death spawns are useful targets for healing with Guthan's, as they have low defence, a low max hit, and a fair number of life points for their level. Death spawns attack using a magic based attack. Therefore, Protect from Magic or Deflect Magic will work against them, while it hits easily through the melee armour. This can be dangerous while fighting Nechryaels while using Dharok's set effect.
Although they are the lowest levelled monster to drop accursed ashes, it is recommended that players looking for this drop kill lesser demons as they are much more abundant.
