Burnt bones are used to train the Prayer skill. When buried they give 4.5 Prayer experience. These bones, however, cannot be obtained as an item drop. They can only be found in the Demonic Ruins and Red Dragon Isle in the Wilderness. It is not possible to obtain these by using them on any source of heat such as a fire. They are no different to regular bones except that they have a burnt look, and that they weigh slightly less than regular bones. It is not recommended to train prayer with burnt bones, since they are only obtainable in the wilderness, and regular bones give the same amount of experience and are much easier to get.
Burnt bones were also used as a scam. People used to sell these bones for ridiculous prices, telling people they were rare. After the balanced trade update, this scam became impossible. With the reintroduction of free trade this scam is possible again, but not effective because of the guide price shown in the trade window.
Recently through, due to the Law of Supply and Demand, a lack of burnt bones in the Grand Exchange stock has caused a big increase in its price, from a few dozens of coins to Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character "[". coins. The best way to make profit with burnt bones to free players is running the distance from Daemonheim to the Demonic Ruins and going back, considering there are 9 burnt bones spawns in the Ruins and you almost cannot be harmed by the giant demons, making the only danger in the activity PKers.
Cost and XP Analysis
This table can be used to compare and decide on how to train with the bones for the most desired cost versus experience gained. Notice how the cost in coins per XP point varies greatly depending on how the bones are used — but also remember that the different methods have different training speeds.
