Small pouches are bags that can hold three rune essence or pure essence for use in the Runecrafting skill. This item is initially obtained from the Mage of Zamorak, who provides one free small pouch upon completion of the Abyss miniquest. If lost, Mage of Zamorak does not provide players with a replacement; however, the Dark Mage in the Abyss does provide replacements. It is possible to receive a free replacement by contacting the Dark Mage via the NPC Contact spell.

Replacement pouches can also be obtained from drops by Abyssal leeches, Abyssal guardians, and Abyssal walkers in the Abyss and Abyssal Area. A moderate safe and fast way to obtain a replacement pouch as a drop is to target Abyssal leeches in the Abyssal Area. The leeches are low level, easily killed by most players, and respawn rapidly, while the Abyssal Area is not multicombat, unlike the Abyss itself. Abyssal walkers can be a threat, but there are several areas where leeches spawn that are not patrolled by walkers. The Abyssal Area, however, can only be reached using Fairy ring ALR and requires at least partial completion of Fairytale II - Cure a Queen.

Despite common belief, small pouch replacements cannot be obtained from either the Mage of Zamorak or Wizard Korvak. (Wizard Korvak does provide medium for free, large and giant pouches for a price.)

This pouch is useful for gaining larger amounts of experience per trip to a Runecrafting altar, as it allows the user to carry more rune essence per trip. However, the user must refill the small pouch after each trip, increasing the amount of time spent per trip. To fill a pouch, have it in inventory along with three unnoted pieces of essence and simply click on the pouch. To empty a pouch, have it in inventory along with at least one unused inventory slot and click on the pouch (if there is not enough room in inventory to remove all the carried essence, 'extra' essence will remain in the pouch). Pouches may be filled or emptied by right-clicking as well, at the cost of added time; the right click method also works with the bank interface open.

Small pouches are the only pouches that do not degrade and thus do not need repairing.

This item is not kept on death. Therefore, players under imminent threat of death may drop the pouch, so as to collect it later from their place of death. When a pouch is dropped, however, any essence in it is destroyed.

Trivia

  • Although the requirement to use a small pouch is only Level 1 Runecrafting, upon completion of the Abyss miniquest the player receives 1,000 Runecrafting experience, raising the player's Runecrafting level to at least 9.
  • According to the Mage of Zamorak at the end of the Abyss miniquest, the pouches are actually unused organs from Abyssal creatures and somehow contain more space than they appear to.
