Icthlarin is the Desert Pantheon god of the dead, the son of Tumeken and Elidinis, and brother of Amascut, the Devourer. He was the original leader of the Mahjarrat. Icthlarin is first encountered in the Icthlarin's Little Helper quest. Icthlarin's role is a god, and he's not concerned with the act of death but with taking care of the dead, and making sure they reach the afterlife. Icthlarin's only act is to help the spirits of the dead, Good or Evil, get to the Underworld safely where they can rest peacefully in their next life. But his "job" is not that easy, because Amascut's goal is to destroy the souls of the dead before they reach the underworld so they are erased from history completely. To this end, he is important in the funeral rites of those who worship him. This role as a protector of souls often brings Icthlarin into conflict with Amascut, who wishes to consume the souls of the deceased.

Note that cats are included as guardians of Icthlarin, as Amascut is terrified of them, and as the Sphinx protects the cats so too does Icthlarin protect the Sphinx.

History

Icthlarin's history is limited but it is known that he is the son of Tumeken and the river-goddess, Elidinis. He brought the Mahjarrat to Gielinor from Freneskae during the Second Age and protected them. The presence of the Mahjarrat led his sister, Amascut, go insane due to their corruption, and started to distrust her. The Mahjarrat abandoned Icthlarin after a battle with Zaros' forces and joined Zaros' side.

What Azzanadrasays about Icthlarin:

Also no one "stole" the Mahjarrat from anyone. The Mahjarrat will align themselves with the God of the path that they feel fit. Icthlarin was a fool who thought he could control us, but he never had the influence that he thought. When Zaros found us we no longer needed Icthlarin, for we had found in Zaros, not only one of great power, but also a god who truly understood the ways of the Mahjarrat.

Icthlarin's Little Helper

As seen in the quest Icthlarin's Little Helper, he is a fairly 'Bluey - Black.' He is wearing a blue and yellow plate skirt, a colour which is not available to players.

Icthlarin appears to an adventurer in Icthlarin's Little Helper as a tall male humanoid with a jackal head. He warns them of Amascut, his sister, and how she is planning the adventurer's demise. He also breaks the spell that kept the adventurer under the control of Amascut, causing him/her to wake up in the streets of Sophanem.

Trivia

  • Icthlarin is probably based on the ancient Egyptian God Anubis. This is because Anubis is the Egyptian god of the dead and has the head of a jackal, which both are features of Icthlarin. Note that Osiris later replaced Anubis as the Egyptian god of the dead as well as that of the underworld, yet was not portrayed with the head of a jackal.
  • Icthlarin appears to be wielding a Pharaoh's sceptre and also wearing a blue Menaphite action kilt and Brass necklace.
  • His symbol is an ankh (☥), an ancient Egyptian symbol which was popular with pharaohs' tombs. It means "Eternal Life."
  • His symbol is the same as Amascut's symbol, but hers is an inverted version of his.
  • Although Icthlarin is a god, he's not affected by the Edicts of Guthix. This is likely due to the Pantheon's individual gods's relatively low power.
