Regicide is the fourth quest in the Plague quest series. In it, King Lathas sends the player to Tirannwn to kill his brother, King Tyras.

Continuing the Plague City series, the Regicide Quest takes you beyond the 'Well of Voyage' to a new realm.

King Lathas will employ you once again, this time for the grim task of disposing of his brother.

Once you have travelled to the realm you will find yourself surrounded by new and strange plants, animals and even a new race.

Once there, you will see that everything is not as serene as it first appears.

Walkthrough

Start point: Randomly receive a message from King Lathas's messenger (similar to a random event, but it should not take long; typically, the event happens in about half an hour of game time after completing Underground Pass). When doing this quest, players should be careful to make sure they have all items they may need before setting out on the trip, as if you reach Isafdar and realize they have forgotten anything, it is a long way between the bank and the quest areas, even with teleports.

Beginning the quest

Getting the King's message.

Note: The King's message is received automatically approximately 15-20 minutes after finishing the Underground Pass quest.

After receiving the King's message, go to King Lathas. He will tell you to go through the Underground Pass again to the western darklands. You will not need to do anything from the underground pass quest again, you just need to go through the dungeon. You will need to shoot the rope to get through the bridge and go through the obstacles. But you do not need to collect the orbs again, make the doll again, or kill the unicorn. Do not talk to the knights, as they will attack you. In other words, it will be significantly easier to get through than before. To get to the well of voyage, you need to go to the chamber where Iban was (don't worry, he isn't there any more).

Players must make sure they have talked to King Lathas before entering the Underground Pass, even if they are sure they have already started the quest. If you do not talk to King Lathas before going to the Well of Voyage, Iban will still be there.

Before going into the Pass, make sure you have:

  • A rope (or two!)
  • Bow and arrows
  • Antipoison (or Prayer book from Great Brain Robbery Quest with blessed Holy Symbol)
  • good food
  • A weapon to kill a Tyras guard
  • (Optional) Hatchet and Tinderbox (barbarian firemaking does not work here) for cooking food (there is a fishing Spot at the River near the elf camp, where one can use Bait or Lure fishing along the river, and northwest of the elf camp is a Big Fishing net/harpoon spot for sharks).
  • If you are using a Summer pie or Agility potion bring these with you
  • If you are not planning on picking up the plank respawn, bring a plank too
  • (Optional) At least 3200 coins to charter a ship at Port Tyras unless you plan on going back through the Underground Pass.
  • (Optional) All 4 pieces of the Citharede robes set (there is a musician near the exit from the Underground Pass)
  • Boosts to agility, if you are planning to do it with less than 56.

Once at the pass, you'll meet scouts from King Lathas. After that the scout will tell you something.

See the separate guide for instructions about how to get through the pass and to the well.

Once you're at Iban's temple, go in. Although you might see Iban inside the temple when you're outside, it is safe to proceed if you have completed Underground Pass. Iban will disappear when you enter, so you can simply climb down the Well of Voyage (if you talk to Koftik he will give you food). You'll find an altar and a summoning obelisk there.

Obstacles

Traps do not stop forward motion. You fall right into/over them and take damage. On the way, players encounter four different obstacles.

The dense forest

Dense forest
You need level 56 Agility to navigate through this. You cannot get through until later in the quest when an Elf Tracker teaches you how. Dense forest cannot be failed and it acts as a shortcut inside the forest. It's also the only way to reach some areas. If your agility is 51-55 and you are using summer pies/agility potions, there a few things that would come in handy:

  • On the way into Tyras's camp: If players need to increase agility with potions or pies, they are only needed on the way in, not on the way out.
  • Potions or pies are only required for the first of the 3 dense forests in a series. For example, you use a potion up to Level 56 to get through the first dense forest, then your agility goes down to 55. You can still go through the second and third dense forests. One dense forest is defined as the 3 obstacles which you must climb in a row. Remember this as you may end up using more boosts than necessary.
The leaf trap

BEWARE: Be sure to click the leaf trap as close to the edge as you can. If you click the other side of the trap (farthest from you), you will fall in.
These look just like trees from above. You will see some leaves on the ground. If you step on them, you'll fall into a pit and lose 150 lifepoints. Click "jump over" on the same side to you of the trap. You may fail. IMPORTANT: Get a good running start at the traps, as you will have a higher chance of success if you run. If you walk over them, you have a much higher chance of failure than success. Failing this trap can trigger a glitch- you will get stuck in a wall- and there is no way of walking out of it, if this happens, log out and log back in it should work. However, this is a very rare glitch. Avoiding the leaf trap should be done at all costs to prevent damage and glitching.

The trip wire. There are two of them.

You will see two rocks very close together. There are also four miniature crossbows pointing at them. Make sure run mode is turned off, then move your cursor between the rocks to find a tripwire, and step over. If you trigger the trap, you'll be hit double 50s and get a 28-damage poison condition. This trap seems to be very difficult to pass successfully, so you will definitely want to bring Antipoison. If you accidentally walk straight over the trap do not click back to try and stop it, you will end up walking over it twice. If you try to stop it again you will walk over it a third time and you will keep losing 100 health. Many players have died from this mistake.

You'll see some sticks on the ground in a formation similar to a hurdle. Right-click "pass" on them.You will almost always fail. If you do, you'll lose 80 lifepoints. (It is unconfirmed by Jagex, but it seems that if you click 'Examine' a few times before attempting to pass the trap, the chances of passing it are dramatically increased.)

Note: If you need food urgently, you can kill rabbits around Isafdar and cook them on fire in Elf Camp. They heal 50 Life Points each.

In Isafdar

Idris is killed.

Go out of the cave. You'll meet with Idris on your way westward, but Morvran and Essylt will quickly shoot him down. They will tell you to talk to Lord Iorwerth, who can be found at the camp in the north west corner of the forest.

Make your way through the forest to the north west corner - the Elf Camp. Lord Iorwerth will tell you to talk to his Tracker after you tell him that King Lathas sent you.

  • (Note) If you didn't bring food, go Northwest from Lord Iorwerth where you can kill rabbits and cook them each healing 50HP each, this may be a good idea because of the traps.

Find Tracker

Go southeast of the camp until you find an Elf Tracker. He is due east of Tyras Camp in the map. He won't believe you since you're a human, so return to Lord Iorwerth to get a crystal pendant. Talk to the Tracker again with the pendant in your inventory. He will tell you to find the Tyras Camp.

A great way to kill the guard

Find Tyras Camp

If you are planning to take the ship at Tyras' Port instead of going back through the Underground Pass, make sure you bring 3200 gold with you before navigating to Tyras' Camp!

Check the footprints to the west into the dense forest. If you are told that you see no way past then go back to the Elf Tracker and talk to him and he will tell you what you need to know to pass. You can now climb through if you have 56 agility. You need to see the tracks and follow them before you can continue. Examine the forest if you can't find the tracks.

Walk along the path, pass through the trip wire and dense forest and try to pass the dense forest to the Tyras Camp, a level 110 Tyras guard will attack you, equipped with a steel halberd. He has a very high defence and hitpoints (comparable to Barrows) and can hit a maximum of 157 (sometimes through full Rune), but should be somewhat easy to defeat with Protect from Melee and a decent weapon or magic/Ancients. Be aware that there are not many "safe spots", and his halberd can reach most of them.

There is a very easy way to defeat the guard. Simply continue until the guard appears & attacks you. Climb back through the dense forest. If you wait long enough the guard will simply disappear. You can move on from here. Later in the quest, you will see a guard in front of a dense forest. But will not move into most sections of the forest, making it easy to use magic or range on him. You can also run to the edge of the forest, where the guard will not venture, and have somebody lower his health. You must strike the final blow for it to count!

After you've killed him, continue on to the Tyras Camp. Talk to General Hining. Be sure to grab a few barrels while you are in Tyras's Camp.

After killing the guard you can charter a ship to and from Port Tyras. (NOTE: Taking the ship costs 3200 gold).

Back to Elves

NOTE: If you are using a Summer Pie to boost agility to 56 in order to navigate the Dense Forest, it is wise to have the barrels in your inventory before you speak to Lord Iorwerth to avoid extra pies being needed for an extra trip to Tyras' Camp.

Go back to Lord Iorwerth. He gives players the Big book of bangs. Read and keep the book. You will need it later, when you speak with the chemist in Rimmington. After the chemist reads it, it is of no further use. It can be found again in your POH library.

You need to make an explosive compound.

You will need limestone. Any limestone in the game works, whether bought on the Grand Exchange or mined as described below, but limestone bricks do not work. You can also mine the limestone near Paterdomus.

  • There is limestone mine south-east of the elf camp. Caution: the mine is guarded by level 88 Dire Wolves. You can see a roll of slant rock. Go through the dense forest and pass the hunter area. Watch out for the trip wire.
  • Barrels can be obtained either on the Grand Exchange, or in Tyras' Camp. They can also be obtained in the abandoned apple orchard near Tree Gnome Stronghold.

Go south of the Elf Tracker until you find a poison waste swamp. Use the barrels on the coal tar. The tar can be difficult to find; see the Barrel of coal-tar article for an image detailing exactly where to obtain it. Remember to save at least one empty barrel.

Take some sulphur (just lying on the ground at the edge of the poison waste) and grind it with your pestle and mortar to make yellow Ground sulphur.

It is common for players to not be able to take the sulphur and tar right away. If this happens to you, try moving around the area. You can only reach tar that is close to the edge of the swamp.

Making the explosive

Inventory: 10 coal, Big book of bangs, barrel of coal-tar, empty barrel, gloves, pestle and mortar (can be toolbelt), strip of cloth, bar of limestone, Ground sulphur, and a pot.

NOTE: Be sure to have extra coal ready in your bank or inventory, this part may be difficult for some, so have extra coal to prevent going all the way to the Grand Exchange to get more.

Teleport out of the elf kingdom or take the charter ship out of Port Tyras and fill your inventory with the items listed above.

Go to the Chemist's House just west of Rimmington and talk to the Chemist. Use the barrel of coal-tar with the Fractionalizing still.

The book is needed so that the chemist can give you instructions on how to make the stuff, but once he's done that it is of no further use.

To operate the still:

  • Click the right side of the valve to the right twice, so the tar should be flowing at maximum. The 'pressure' indicator on the left should go up.
  • When the pressure indicator reaches the green region, click the right side of the valve on the left once to let out pressure. This should stall the indicator on the left.
    • (Do not shut the valve by putting the right valve back to the left, there will be no flow of coal-tar and therefore no progress. The left Should be at 12 and right at 3)
  • Start adding coal. This raises the indicator on the right. If it's below the green region, add more coal. If it's above, don't add coal until it gets lower. (When adding coal, click on where it reads add coal and this will add it 1 piece at a time).
    • WARNING: IF THE "HEAT" REACHES THE DARK ORANGE SECTION, YOU WILL MESS UP AND WILL HAVE TO START BACK ON STEP 1.
  • The bar on the bottom should start turning green. When it's full, stop adding coal and close the window on the top right to get the barrel of naphtha.
  • Be sure to take a barrel with you, because if you lack one, then you will not be able to retrieve that naphtha until you have a barrel.
  • The barrel that used to contain the tar should work, but may not.

If you accidentally run out of coal, the progress you are currently on will be saved. This means you do not have to reset the pressure or readd more coal.

While wearing gloves, use a bar of limestone (not a limestone brick) on any furnace (there is one at the Tyras Camp, and also one in Lumbridge). (Superheat Item does not work.) Quicklime should be formed. You can do this step ahead of the barrel of napatha if needed.

If players heat the limestone without wearing gloves, it could damage up to 80 life points; however quicklime will still be made. Lunar gloves, cosmic gloves, infinity gloves, gloves from the Gielinor Games and slayer gloves will not protect from damage.
  • Be sure to have a pot in your inventory before grinding or else the quicklime will disappear and you will need to heat another piece of limestone.

Use pestle and mortar on the quicklime to get a Pot of quicklime. Add the pot of quicklime to the naphtha. Add the ground sulphur to the naptha mix, making the Barrel bomb.

Use a strip of cloth on the bomb. If players didn't weave four balls of wool into cloth yet, go to the loom at the farm west of the Falador cabbage patch and do so.

Toolbelt will work for the tinderbox

Now that you have the barrel bomb, go to Port Tyras using the charter ship (3200 coins needed)(or 1600 coins with a ring of Charos(a)). If you have completed the quest Cabin Fever all the charter prices are cut in half (1600 coins)(or 800 with a ring of Charos(a)).

Some players have reported being unable to take a ship back. If you're one of the unlucky ones the Underground Pass is your only option, don't forget to bring 2 ropes, 2 arrows, a plank, a spade and some food, summer pies are recommended for boost and not falling. Bring also antipoison or Prayer Book & Holy Symbol or Cure Me spell runes (2 astral runes,2 cosmic runes, 1 law rune per spell and current book has to be the Lunar Spellbook) to cure poison during the trip to Tyras Camp.

When you are in the elven lands, kill a rabbit in the camp the tracker is found in to get rabbit meat. Cook it on a fire in the Elven Camp or lit on the ground. Alternatively, you could purchase a rabbit from the Charter Ship Crewmember & cook it. Go to the catapult outside the Tyras Camp. Give the cooked rabbit to the non-armoured Tyras guard near the catapult to distract him. Then use the barrel on the front of the catapult (you need to have a tinderbox or a DAA in your inventory to so this, though the toolbelt tinderbox works too). Don't forget to place a strip of cloth in the barrel for a fuse.

Go back to Lord Iorwerth. He will give you a message to take to King Lathas, then give you access to the overground pass of Arandar. Make sure you have the letter before transporting away or you will have to run the Underground Pass again.

Take the overpass or teleport away, then go to Ardougne Castle. On the way, an elf named Arianwyn will break the magic seal on the letter and tell the player to read it. In the letter, Lord Iorwerth told King Lathas that Tyras was killed and that the Dark Lord (mentioned in previous quests) could be called into Gielinor to take over Camelot and the world. Arianwyn further revealed the "path" being connected to Zamorak's realm, and recruits the player to his side instead. Yet, Arianwyn tells you to talk to Lathas first for your reward.

Trivia

  • The name of the author of the Big Book O' Bangs is "Mel Achy", an anagram of "Alchemy".
  • The substance in the barrel bomb has a real life parallel: Greek Fire, which ignites on contact with water and is very hard to put out once it begins to burn.
  • Naphtha was used in Mongol Siege Warfare in the time of Genghis Khan. It is thrown by a catapult and it catches fire when airborne.
  • Even though you bombarded Tyras's tent, if you go back to the camp and look it will look as if it hasn't caught on fire. However, talking to General Hinning will show that he is in fear.
  • After Arianwyn speaks to you, he may remain in that area for a short period of time. During this time if you speak to him, it says "Nothing interesting happens." The same thing also happens when you meet Morvran for the first time.
  • After completion, reading the quest journal will reveal nothing but simply stating that the player had done the job.
  • After completion of the quest, one's Adventurer's Log will read "I was tricked all along by King Lathas to believe his brother Tyras was evil. I killed Tyras only to learn Lathas wants to help the mourners bring their 'Dark Lord' back!"
  • After completing the quest, if you talk to Juna, your character will say, "...I returned to tell King Lathas that the assassination was successful, and he rewarded me."
  • After the cut-scene when you launch the barrel into the tent in Port Tyras and it blows up, the tent is still intact and fine if you cross the Dense Forest back south of the catapult.
  • The King's message, received at the start of the quest, is a free-to-play object, even though the quest is a members-only quest.
