Vial of stench (a) is a nonconsumable potion that can be made during and after the caper A Guild of Our Own. It is created by having Chief Thief Robin in the Thieves’ Guild cast a spell on a Vial of stench to activate it. It is used in the caper to distract the people in the Guild Registry from being able to identify the player. Players may only have one Vial of stench (a) at a time, but can be remade at any time if it is lost. To activate its post-quest ability, you must speak to Chief Thief Robin again and he will enchant it further. Its after quest effect will not work without this step.
This potion allows the player to steal from stalls and then immediately sell the stolen goods to the stall owners, as the owners will not be able to identify the player as the thief who stole from them. The Vial of stench (a) only needs to be in the inventory for its effect to work.
Trivia
- There is a bug where the vial will not allow players to sell items stolen from stalls back to the owner if the player had the vial on them when they stole the items. This has yet to be fixed as of 3 May 2012.
- The Vial of stench and Vial of stench (a) are two of the few potions which cannot be consumed.
- The color of the Vial of stench (a) is different in inventory as compared to looking at it in inventory during banking.
