(Commander/King) Veldaban is a dwarven commander of the Dwarven Black Guard, the elite Military and Police Regiment in Keldagrim. Commander Veldaban can be found in the building west of the Keldagrim bank.
As Veldaban is a commander of an elite dwarven force, he may appear harsh at first, but is actually a warm-hearted individual with the city's best interests at heart. Commander Veldaban is always aware of all that takes place within the city. He is particularly suspicious of The Red Axe and their brutal methods of business.
His eccentric father, Dondakan, is the main character in Between a Rock.... Commander Veldaban himself features heavily in The Giant Dwarf, Forgettable Tale of a Drunken Dwarf, Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf and King of the Dwarves. He is a reliable supporter of the player character, and serves admirably as Commander until his unanticipated resignation. His combat level is 125.
It is worth noting that during the time he follows you in Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf, he runs if you run. At the time, Commander Veldaban was the only NPC able to do so.
Role in Quests
Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf
In the blog New Dwarf Quest: Implementation Begins, Commander Veldaban is said to be involved in an upcoming quest in the Rise of the Red Axe quest series. At the end of Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf, Veldaban resigns from the Black Guard after a heated disagreement with the Consortium and Supreme Commander Bisi over how to proceed after discovering that the Red Axe organisation is breeding an army of chaos dwarves with aid from Arposandra. Following his resignation, Commander Veldaban can be found at a table in the Laughing Miner Pub in eastern side of Keldagrim. When spoken to at the Laughing Miner, he states that he will continue his investigation and that people are still going missing from Keldagrim, though the player cannot be of assistance at the present time.
In Forgiveness of a Chaos Dwarf, he is revealed to have had a love interest with a female dwarf from East Keldagrim named Hilda who was unfortunately turned into a Chaos dwarf when she and Veldaban were spying on The Red Axe.
In the concept art, Veldaban wears his royal outfit, which he only wears after King of the Dwarves.
King of the Dwarves
During King of the Dwarves, the ex-commander Veldaban is arrested by the Consortium in relation to the attack on the lava-flow mine by a chaos dwarf. With the player's assistance, he is released. Together, the player and Veldaban find Hreidmar, former head of the Red Axe, making a speech to a crowd outside the Consortium building about reviving the monarchy in Keldagrim. The Monarchist Society is not present in the gathering, so Veldaban and the player search the city, eventually finding Meike, their leader. The player, Meike, and Veldaban then obtain copies of the six keys to the sealed records chamber in Keldagrim. Once the room is opened, Meike discovers that Hreidmar is actually the direct heir of the last dwarf king, Alvis. Veldaban and the player leave Meike in the records room to attempt to find a loophole somewhere. They travel to the caverns of Barendir, where Colonel Grenda and the black guard are in a stand-off with a small division of chaos dwarves, with Colonel Grimsson. Veldaban confronts Grimsson, and with the player's help defeats him, causing him to retreat to a fortified position.
Veldaban then leaves the player, heading to the Laughing Miner tavern, while the player talks with the trolls. He is next seen in the crowd outside the Consortium, where the leaders of the mining companies make an announcement: they are stepping down as rulers, instead serving under a new king, and that after analysis of the records they have found the heir to be Veldaban, not Hreidmar. It is revealed that Meike has altered the records to make the king's lineage point to Veldaban's family, rather than Hreidmar. In addition, one of the regulations of the monarchy is that the king must be under 150 years old (if a king reaches this age, the throne passes to his heir), thus Veldaban's father, Dondakan, is too old so the throne is Veldaban's, despite Veldaban not truly wanting to be king - he is prepared to be king to prevent Hreidmar.
