Spikes can only be found in the mini game Barbarian Assault on the 10th wave. The person designated as the attacker must take them from the petrified mushroom. Their only use to be used upon an Omega egg. This item is automatically removed from your inventory when you leave the Barbarian Assault staging cavern.
