A player digging with a spade

A Spade is a multi-functional tool in RuneScape. It has many uses, such as harvesting crops in the Farming skill, digging up caskets during Treasure Trails, accessing the Barrows activity, digging mole hills at Falador and performing various tasks during quests. When it was originally released, it was only used in Pirate's Treasure quest.

They are sold in Farming shops, and an infinite supply can be gained in your house by making a Tool store 5 at 55 Construction. Alternatively, they can be derived from a Rogue kit.

In the Vinesweeper activity, a spade can be bought for 5 coins from Mrs. Winkin

Some general stores have them:

Also, spades spawn in Falador (in the Estate agent building just east of the furnace), in the top floor of the Varrock general store, in the mining spot near Rimmington, Lumbridge Swamp (in the shack, with a rake), inside Draynor Manor, and in Edmond's garden (in East Ardougne). There is also a spade in the mining spot near Falador.

Interestingly, moving the cursor over a spade in your inventory does not cause any icon to appear. Other items have either "equip", "drink", "eat", or "use" icons whenever the cursor is moved over the item in the inventory. This is likely because the left-click option is "dig".

A spade can be stored in the Toolbelt, but it can't be used for activities that need the "dig" option like certain quests. Since the Barrows revamp in January 2012, a spade is no longer needed to enter the tombs.
