A RuneScape music video, called RSMV for short, is a video filmed in RuneScape using a screen recorder along with music in the background, usually with some sort of text. These videos then are then added to video upload sites such as YouTube. Emotes, outfits and locations are often the feature of these videos. Many directors also use proprietary third-party software known as RuneScape Clients to reduce lag and improve aesthetics while filming and therefore improve the quality of the video.

Software

Almost any type of recording and editing software is usable, although many new directors opt to use Camstudio or Hypercam (2 and 3) and Windows Movie Maker, as they are free and easily obtained. More experienced directors usually decide to use paid software in order to improve the quality of their videos. Popular screen recording software is Camtasia Recorder and Fraps, while Sony Vegas Pro Edition 7, 8 and 9 are often used for editing.

Copyright issues

Due to the addition of the WMG copyright system on Youtube, some RSMVs on Youtube have their audio muted. This is often avoided by having a copyright disclaimer under US law or getting the copyright holder's permission to use their content. It is also possible to appeal these mutes, and the appeals are usually successful.

Copyright Disclaimer

Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use.
