The Muspah is a creature that has never existed, outside of stories and folklore. However, there are some historians who have studied their mention throughout history. According to Mahjarrat legends, it was created when a god combined his most fearsome creatures into one.
The Muspah in The Tale of the Muspah is actually the Mahjarrat Jhallan, who accidentally transformed into a Muspah when he had a nightmare of one during his sleep. The Muspah was first mentioned by the Chaos Elemental: "Muspah, famous, sleeps with the fishies, if fishies frozen could be." <ref name="Postbag 36">Postbag 36</ref>. In the next Postbag from the Hedge the big high goblin priest said: "did have vision other night that he coming back real soon - but it jumbled up with stuff about skeletons in ice and weird thing with horns and yellow stripes." This is obviously a reference to the Muspah.
After the player has uncovered the Muspah's statue under the sand, Ali the Wise will tell you that despite its fearsome appearance, it is proven that the Muspah can be destroyed fairly easily.
