Monkey Guards are level 167 gorillas that reside in Ape Atoll's temple.

Biography

Monkey Guards live on the ground floor and first floor of Ape Atoll's temple. They have a large amount of health and throw vicious punches that can hit up to 144. When they have very low health, they will beat their chest, causing them to heal 250 life points which is about 20% of their Lifepoints; they appear to be able to do this indefinitely but only while in melee range. Contrary to popular belief they are not immune to magic, but they do have an extremely high magic defence.

Benefits

Because the Monkey Guards heal themselves and because there is an altar in the temple, many players train combat of all forms on them by fighting them with Protect from Melee on the whole time. When they are low on Prayer, they pray at the altar and continue their training. Players can also use stat-boosting prayers such as Piety to aid training. The Monkey Guards also heal themselves often, providing more experience.

Most players wear a form of Prayer armour and strength boosting armour (depending on what they prefer). However, prayer isn't needed that badly because of the nearby altar. Dharoking is also a popular activity, since the player does not need to worry about low health when they have prayer activated. It is wise to have multiple antipoisons, in case the nearby level 1 spider poisons you, although a prayer book can be used to save money.

One may use an Anti-poison totem from Dungeoneering rewards in order to have complete immunity against the poisonous spider, allowing players to remain there for as long as they wish. This method, coupled with having a Bonecrusher in your inventory, will allow you to gain massive amounts of experience in a short time.

When ranging the guards, use range-boosting prayers. This will drain your prayer twice as fast when using only Protect from Melee, but being next to an altar to recharge makes this fact irrelevant.

  • Also be aware that monkey guards have an attack span of two squares, allowing them to hit you from afar, much like a halberd but they cannot hit over furniture (e.g. tables or the altar)

Other information

  • Level 1 Spiders also live in the temple and can poison for up to 40 life points. It is recommended players bring about four antipoisons or 1 Antipoison++ along with them on the island to prevent being poisoned. The spider will eventually be tolerant and not poison you. The best method, however, is to bring a Prayer Book and a holy symbol, as you can recharge prayer indefinitely, thus curing poison indefinitely. An even better solution would be bringing an Anti-poison totem from Dungeoneering rewards, which will allow you FULL immunity towards the Monkey Guards and Spiders like from a Prayer Book and holy symbol, but you do not even need to click anything to cure yourself. You will be immune to poison while having it equipped. However, using the Anti-poison totem makes you unable to use a strength boosting shield such as a Dragon Defender or a 2h weapon such as a Saradomin Sword or Dharok's Greataxe, so it may be a better option to simply carry a holy symbol and prayer book, and wear the holy symbol and chant when poisoned.
  • Monkey Guards drop larger versions of monkey bones, which give 18 prayer experience points when buried. However, these are not tradeable.
  • If you kill a Monkey Guard, you can bring its bones, along with a Monkey Talisman, to Zooknock in the tunnel under ape atoll to create a gorilla greegree. Whether or not your gorilla form has a beard depends on the monkey guard you received the bones from.
  • A combat training method using Monkey Guards that has become increasingly popular is equipping a Dharok's set when health is lowered, and proceeding to use protect from melee to deal extremely high hits with no chance of dying. This method has become popular due to the altar nearby that will recharge Prayer points. One danger about this is that there is another poisonous level 1 Spider, which could kill you by the poison, even when you have your prayer on. It will eventually become tolerant, though after about 10 minutes, so it is an extremely fast way of getting experience if planning to spend a lot of time there.
  • The Bearded Monkey Guards can be very annoying during the quest, Monkey madness. For example, after exiting the dungeon in the temple, Bearded Monkey Guards can surround you, stopping you from exiting the temple. At this time, the Monkey Guards will take turns attacking you, so it is suggested that you go back into the dungeon and log out. Then go to a another world (highly populated). If problem persists, ask some other players in the temple to help distract the Monkey guards.
  • Another possible thing to do is go up the ladder and exit by using the ladder near the trapdoor.
  • The monkey guards heal themselves when directly attacking them. Although they will not heal if not in combat.
