Wizard Melville Grayzag is a wizard located on the second floor of the Wizards' Tower outside the Lesser demon cage. He seems to have a grudge against Wizard Mizgog, who stands across the hall from him. Grayzag is the main antagonist in the Imp Catcher quest, as he told the imps to steal Wizard Mizgog's beads. After the quest, he is very angry at the adventurer for retrieving his beads. He is also seen during the Wizards' Tower Robbery, summoning five imps to counter the attack, although they are easily killed by Zenevivia. He curses and teleports to safety, just before the arrival of the Thingummywut. When conversing with Evil Dave about his luck with 'demon-summoning', Dave reveals that he thought he should start small. He asked Grayzag for help with summoning imps, but instead only succeeded in summoning Hell-Rats, a level of demon even lower than that of imps.
During A Towering Feast, an imp had stolen Grayzag's hat and, in addition, four of his imps had decided to play hide and seek. The player had to find the imps and retrieve the hat, then suggesting to use snow imps as waiters.
Attempt at conquest and involvement with pests
“ | I am the greatest summoner alive! | ” |
Since the people at the Tower did not appreciate his summoning skills and mocked his imps, he decided he'd summon something bigger, which turned out to be the Pest Queen, one of the strongest creatures alive. For twenty years, he practised summoning portals on deserted islands in the Southern Sea (which resulted in Pest Control) as well as manipulating Lord Daquarius to make lots of void leech goo to stop the fabled Valluta from killing the Queen. This started when Grayzag encountered the story of Valluta in his studies. After the events of Imp Catcher, the player has become another target.
During Quiet Before the Swarm, a party of Void Knights is attacked by a swarm of pests whilst going to Port Sarim. Leading these pests is a mysterious figure wielding a staff with a dark blue orb, who personally kills Commodore Matthias. This later turns out to be Grayzag, recognisable by the staff and his trademark spell; a bolt of lightning. Grayzag has been secretly manipulating Jessika, the Kinshra, and others to assemble the items needed for him to summon the Pest Queen. He plans to unleash the pest queen on the world and manages to summon her,
In the Void Knights quest series, Jessika says that a Professor Melville, who is not seen in the first two quests, Quiet Before the Swarm and A Void Dance, is researching the void pests and sent her to the Void Knights' Outpost to study a pest at first hand for him. In the third quest, The Void Stares Back, Professor Melville turns out to be Wizard Grayzag and is the main antagonist in the quest series. In the beginning of the quest, it turns out that someone, later revealed to be Grayzag, has sabotaged the Kinshra's security system, which leads to the death of a soldier. He has switched labels of crates containing weights which form a password for a door (thus making a knight entering the wrong password and electrifying him), given security blocks of the second door to a group of pests which ambush any knights passing through and finally put a magical trap on the control panels of the third door. During the quest, the doors must be opened, only to reveal that all the goo in the waxwood boxes has been stolen and a strange, blue portal left behind. The portal leads to Grayzag, who leaves an army of pests behind before heading to the Valluta, with a group of splatters causing a cave-in. When the army is defeated, Grayzag kills Jessika or Korasi (depending on the player's choice) and summons the Queen, but the player, with aid from several knights, defeats the queen. After a failed attempt to escape, the player decides Grayzag's fate. He may be tortured by the Kinshra, executed by the Void Knights, imprisoned by the White Knights or interrogated by the Temple Knights. Afterwards, Wizard Taloram replaces him during the Wizards' Tower Robbery cutscene.
History
Wizard Grayzag was once combat level 41. He was attackable and would summon Black imps (three at once) to assist him in combat. He can no longer be attacked and therefore no longer has a combat level.
Trivia
- Despite being graphically updated in The Void Stares Back, he is yet to be updated in the Wizards' Tower.
- Wizard Whitezag replaces him in the 2011 Christmas event and Wizard Taloram during the Wizards' Tower Robbery, for players who have completed The Void Stares Back. The former is a reference to Wizard Gandalf the Grey from Lord of the Rings, who is killed but resurrects himself as Gandalf the White.
- Other wizards call him "Lamezag", according to him.
- In the third book in the RuneScape series, Legacy of Blood, it is stated that Wizard Grayzag is the most powerful summoner in the realm, and one of the most powerful wizards related to the Wizards' Tower. It is also suggested by Castimir that he is evil to the point that he deserves torture.
