The Gem trader runs the Gem Trader in Al Kharid. He buys and sells Sapphires, Emeralds, Rubies, and Diamonds and their uncut versions as well. He has no Main Stock, so he only sells jewels in his Player Stock where he has a limited amount of jewels. You can find a different amount of jewels with him on different worlds, a world with a high popularity is more likely to have more jewels in stock. Still, his shop isn't used frequently or a very popular place to trade gems because of the Grand Exchange, where sellers can receive more money for the gems, cut or uncut. In the quest Family Crest, he directs the player to Avan at the scorpion pit. He isn't liable to have any jewels at all.
Prior to the release of the Grand Exchange, it was common for the Gem trader to have a fairly full stock on free to play worlds as his shop was the easiest way for newer players to sell their gems. However, with the release of the Grand Exchange there is now a better alternative, leaving the Gem trader with an empty shop. Newer players were also able to make small profits by buying uncut gems from the gem trader, cutting them, then selling back for a higher price.
