A Cracked sample is found whilst digging or searching the chests in the building south of the Digsite. It's worthless and serves no purpose, so it is safe to drop. If you use it on a Rock pick, it will disintegrate. However, if you haven't yet finished your certification exam, nothing interesting happens.
