Daemonheim: Who are you calling chicken? The Pit: He's a big one. And he's going nowhere. |
A Chicken is a level 1 monster found in many areas, most notably the chicken coops near Lumbridge and the shack next to the sheep fields. The sheep fields will normally have far fewer people than the location next to the cow field. Unattackable chickens can be found on Daemonheim. A chicken is one of the weakest monsters in RuneScape, only having 10 life points more than a rat.
Chickens drop raw chicken for Cooking and Summoning, eggs for Cooking, bones for Prayer, and 5 to 15 feathers for Fishing or Fletching. A raw chicken is also necessary to access the Evil Chicken's Lair. Because of this, killing chickens can be profitable for low level players. They are also helpful for earning a small amount of money because feathers can sell anywhere from 12-20 coins at the Grand Exchange, and feathers stack in your inventory. Chickens count as birds for a Slayer assignment and can be assigned by Turael or Spria.
For a limited time in 2011, chickens also dropped the 10th anniversary cake and 10th anniversary candles in increments of 1, 2, 3, and 4. This was for celebrating the tenth anniversary of RuneScape.
Many low-level players also kill chickens for combat experience, as they have very low defence and rarely do any damage. Even high-level players may find chickens useful for food if they find themselves low on health near a chicken coop, as eating a cooked chicken provides 30 life points. Chickens will sometimes try to retreat when they have 10 life points left. The chicken farm in Lumbridge is often crowded on free-to-play worlds.
In most populated free-to-play worlds, chicken coops are often full of bones, feathers, eggs, and raw chicken left by players training on the chickens. If one chooses to bury the bones and cook the chicken, they will gain a decent amount of Prayer and Cooking experience. Raw chicken can be bought from the Canifis and Port Sarim food stores and is required in several quests.
