The Broken pickaxe used to be what remained of a pickaxe after a player attempted to extract ore from a smoking rock and the rock exploded. If damaged, players could take it to Nurmof in the Dwarven mines or Bob in Lumbridge to get it repaired. The previously mentioned NPCs would repair broken pickaxes for free or a fee depending on the pickaxe type.

A broken pickaxe

Although it was wieldable, players could not mine with a broken or damaged pickaxe, but players could get it fixed, drop it, and/or examine it. Players could also bank them for later repairs or sell them as well. Note that players could only sell whole and undamaged pickaxes to Nurmof's shop in the Dwarven mines but could have sold damaged or broken pickaxes to any player or the General Store. Players could also buy or sell the heads and pickaxe handles from other players or the General Store too, up until they were removed as well.

Trivia

  • On 25 February 2009 all broken pickaxes were changed back to regular pickaxes. Jagex did this in order to keep a broken pickaxe from becoming a discontinued item like the Disk of returning, Partyhat, or any of the other rare items in the game.
  • A broken adamant pickaxe used to exist behind the temple wall on Ape Atoll, it could not be reached (like the Monkey skull) and was named "Broken pickaxe." (Including the period) after the 25 February updates. Its examine was "Useless." It has since been replaced by a normal bronze pickaxe.
