Star sprites are beings that live within a Shooting Star, a part of Distractions and Diversions game feature. Players are able to meet with this alien creature once the star has been completely mined to the core. Star sprites are willing to exchange Stardust, which are obtained while mining the star, in exchange for Mining experience and rewards (such as runes, ores and coins).

Sprites use stardust as materials for creating objects and items, and to re-build their homes. When the star sprite appears after the mining process, players may talk to it to exchange the stardust for the rewards. However, it is recommended that up to 200 stardust is collected before exchanging, as this is the limit for the rewards granted per day. Star Sprites disappear ten minutes after the star has been completely mined. A day is defined as the 24 hour period beginning at 0000 (UTC).

In addition to item rewards, a player is also granted the ability to mine an additional ore for 15 minutes, for any ore up to runite. This ability stacks with the Varrock armour, meaning players could mine up to three ores from a single rock, or four ore at once in concentrated rocks.

  • The examine, "Use the force", is a reference to the Star Wars series.
  • The other examine refers to the 1991 pop song "Shiny Happy People" by REM
  • Its strange appearance has caused many players to give the sprite nicknames such as tubbie, after the children's TV characters Teletubbies.
