The Red salamander is the second strongest salamander and can be caught using the Hunter skill. It requires level 60 Ranged, Magic and Attack to wield.
The red salamander is not used often, even though it is one of the few weapons that can attack with magic, ranged, and meele. Being that the ammo for the red salamander only costs 15 coins, using magic and fighting the right creatures can provide very cheap magic xp. The same goes for the black salamander, but its ammo is 18 gold per.
Tarromin Tar is used as ammo for the salamander. Tarromin tar can be made by using a Clean tarromin with Swamp tar along with 39 Herblore. It can also be bought from other players or at the Grand Exchange.
Warning! The red salamander will NOT appear under your gravestone if you die! This is because it is a live creature, and it will run away.
Salamanders can be used as a melee, range, or magic weapon.
- When using a salamander set to give Strength xp, it yields 0.4x the xp for the amount that you hit.
- When using a salamander set to give Ranged xp, it yields 0.4x the xp for the amount that you hit.
- When using a salamander set to give Magic xp, it yields 0.2x the xp for the amount that you hit.
Hitting 0 will not gain any experience.

Trivia
- The attack speed shown only applies to the Scorch (strength) and Blaze (magic) attack styles. The attack speed of the Red Salamander when using the Flare (ranged) attack style is 6, which is similar in concept to the Rapid style of most ranged weapons.
- It is currently possible to use this item on the melee setting to attack monsters that could not previously be meleed, for instance Aviansies and even Kree'ara in the God Wars Dungeon. It can also kill caged enemies while on the melee setting when this used to only be possible with a halberd.
- This item is sometimes used in the Barrows activity as a replacement for a Black salamander if the player does not have all the required 70 skills. Otherwise, it only seems less effective on Karil and Ahrim. The melee brothers seem not to be affected by the different type of salamander, as long as it is on magic attack.
- It has been reported that while doing the Knight Waves Training Grounds mini-quest (unlocked upon completion King's Ransom), the salamanders do not count as a melee weapon, even while on the melee setting.
