A Dark spirit is a spirit that blocks the way to a door in Daemonheim. You need to use your Prayer skill to banish the Dark spirit to enter the next room.
If you fail to banish the spirit, it attacks you dealing damage roughly 1/3 of your hitpoints - this means that if you fail 3 times without eating, you die.
For non-prayer training pures, don't exorcise it. You get prayer experience.
