The sheep which are in black wool, are NPCs that players must shear in the Sheep Shearer quest. They were added on 15 December 2009. When players shear the black sheep with shears, this produces black wool, which can be made into a ball of black wool.
After players complete the quest, they cannot shear the black sheep again, and any excess black wool or balls of black wool are also removed from a player's inventory and bank account.
Black sheep are only found in Fred the Farmer's sheep pen; no black sheep are found in any other places on RuneScape.
Trivia
- Before the 15 December 2009 update, there was only one black lamb instead of a sheep.
- Originally the player had to collect 20 balls of wool. However, many players simply bought the wool (mostly from the Grand Exchange) instead of shearing it. This made Jagex introduce the black sheep to encourage players to actually attempt the quest themselves.
- Sheep can "get away" from you even if you corner it on the fence.
- If you did the quest before the update and talk to Fred the farmer, he will reward you with some gold pieces.
