A Barb-tail harpoon is a one-handed wieldable harpoon obtained by hunting Barb-tailed Kebbits. As well as being a weapon, it can also be used for fishing. Prior to the addition of the toolbelt, many players preferred to use this harpoon over the regular one, as it could be wielded and did not fill an inventory slot, allowing an extra fish to be caught. It also requires no Attack level to wield, but requires 35 Fishing to be used. It has similar stats to the steel dagger, with the exception of 1 more in stab.

When using the Barb-tail harpoon while fishing, the animation suggest's an attempt to catch fish 12.5% faster than if you were to use a regular harpoon. For example, the time it takes to complete 8 "stabs" (or animation cycles) into the water with a regular harpoon is the same amount of time it takes to complete 9 "stabs" (or animation cycles) with a barb-tail harpoon. But this does not effect catching speed at all, the animation is faster but the speed has been proven to be the same. (For example, the sacred clay harpoon, with an extremely short animation, catches at the same speed as a normal harpoon).

With the 6 December update introducing the toolbelt, it is not advised to use a wieldable harpoon. This is because it increases the weight, and drains run energy during bank trips. A regular harpoon can be put into one's toolbelt, not using up an inventory space.

You cannot use this type of harpoon to create Ibis pouches, normal harpoons must be used for that.

Trivia

  • When the "deposit-all" option was added to the banks of RuneScape, people were more inclined to use the Barb-tail harpoon for harpoon fishing spots. This would allow you to bank all your items quickly, without depositing your normal harpoon.
  • As of 9 June 2010 the Inventory Icon of this item was updated in a Hidden update along with the Court cases update.
  • As of 6 October 2010 the Inventory Icon of this item was updated in a hidden update along with the Void Stares Back update.
  • The harpoon is slightly translucent.
  • As of 6 December 2011, the barb-tail harpoon was rendered almost useless with the release of the Toolbelt. Strangely enough, if you've done the barbarian fishing training for catching without a harpoon, and you have a harpoon in your toolbelt and you're under 70 fishing you will not use the harpoon you will fish with your hands and only catch tuna. So if you want to be more efficient you're forced to use a barb-tail harpoon.
  • The examine text refers to how the kebbits use their barbed tails to catch fish.
