Hatchet handles were items created through a random event that caused axe heads to fly off while Woodcutting. This event was removed in an update in July 2007, but a similar event that affected pickaxes remained. Axe heads and handles were either re-attached or deleted to prevent them from becoming discontinued items.

The random event which caused axe heads and handles was removed by Jagex after much negativity from players on the official forums. Many were upset over the fact that dragon hatchet heads, worth a few million, could fly off and be lost if the player wasn't paying attention or had connection problems. The events also caused many annoyances as eagle-eyed players picked up the flying handle or head and then ransomed it back to the original owner so they could get their axe back. Incidents such as this contributed to the eventual deletion of this event. At first this item couldn't be requipped once it was unequipped but that was added in a update, they also didn't make a very good weapon as they had no stats.

Trivia

  • When they, along with pickaxe handles, were removed from the game, anyone who owned one was given a random event gift either in their inventory or bank, depending on where it was when the update occurred.
  • Two of the guards on on the first floor of Port Sarim's Jail appear to wield these.
