The Ancient mace is a weapon that can be acquired during the Another Slice of H.A.M. quest and requires completion of the quest to wield. If lost it can be retrieved from the Goblin archaeologist Tegdak for 1,000 coins, northeast of the Dorgesh-Kaan marketplace. The generals in Goblin Village will also sell the mace, for 1,000 coins, to players who lose it during the quest. The ancient mace is a bit less powerful than a mithril mace.

This mace has a special attack that drains the opponent's prayer points by the amount of damage dealt. The user also gains prayer points in a similar way (equal to damage). This special attack uses 100% of the special attack energy bar. It is possible to achieve a number of prayer points beyond the prayer level with this, although there is a limit: Players can only have 10X + Y points, where X is the player's Prayer level and Y is their maximum hit. If the special is used when prayer points are maxed out, no additional points will be gained.

  • A player who has 720/700 prayer points and hits a max of 90 with the mace special will have their prayer boosted to 790/700, instead of 810/700.
  • Players who attack a Tz-Kih with the mace special in the TzHaar Fight Caves will find that the prayer addition comes before the prayer drain.

This mace is extremely useful in places where a large amount of prayer is needed, but an altar is inaccessible, such as the Tzhaar Fight Caves, or spiritual mage as it is virtually an infinite source of prayer points. However, richer players might want to use their special attack energy on more damaging attacks and instead use prayer potions to restore their prayer points. Players who wish to access the Bandos camp of the God Wars Dungeon may also want to purchase this mace, as it prevents the followers of Bandos from being aggressive towards you. However, this is not recommended for normal combat as it has low stats.

Also, this mace can be useful for the Fist of Guthix activity because of its prayer draining powers.

As the maximum hit with the Ancient Mace is 385 (99 Strength, maximum strength bonus and Extreme strength/Overload), a player can have 1375 Prayer points with the boost of 385 points at level 99.

On 1 November 2011, Jagex fixed the special of the Ancient Mace so it properly functions in PvP situations.

Trivia

  • The special attack of the Ancient mace resembles the special attack of the Barrelchest anchor. In fact, the animation is exactly the same with it being the player holding it above their head and the anchor glowing yellow. For a split second after the special attack has been performed, the player will hold the mace like the Anchor even though it is one handed.
  • The Ancient mace can be used to be protected against the Bandos followers in the God Wars Dungeon.
  • When fighting monsters that can't be damaged by conventional means (e.g. kurasks, turoth, etc.), the special attack will hit 0 but still add what you would have hit to your prayer.
  • Immediately after the Constitution update, the special would occasionally glitch. Rather than adding the amount hit divided by 10, it would add the full hit, resulting in a maximum prayer boost to up to 600 points. This was fixed within a few hours.
  • The Ancient mace cannot be alchemised. If the player attempts to cast Low-level Alchemy or High-Level Alchemy on the mace, a game message pops up that says "The ancient artefact resists your magic."
  • Most items with "ancient" in their name are associated with Zaros. However, the Ancient Mace is associated with Bandos.
  • When using the ancient mace special attack, while wearing the ferocious ring and in Kuradal's dungeon, the 40 extra damage is not included in the restoration of prayer. Example: you hit 140 you gain only 100 prayer points. It is unknown if this was a forgotten update or if it was intentional.
  • The ancient mace looks like an ancient granite mace as time could have worn away the ridges.
  • Using the special attack on a Pheasent in the Lederhosen random event does allow you prayer restoration.
