Alt code

An alt code is a type of code that works in RuneScape. Alt codes enable players to type special characters which are not available on the standard keyboard. To use Alt codes, the player must hold down the Alt key and then press a specific code of numbers on the right side of the keyboard. The player must also have the Num Lock key turned on (i.e., the LED above it is on). It is not used often, since not many people know about it, but when it is used, users often gather around him/her asking him/her how he/she did it. It often is used to draw attention to a statement in chat or on the forums, for example:

→ → → Bank sale! ← ← ←
<¤>¿<¤>

Jagex has made it impossible for players to swear using alt codes.

A few of the working alt codes for those using Windows:

  • ® = alt + 0174
  • Þ = alt + 0222
  • © = alt + 0169
  • ± = alt + 0177
  • Æ = alt + 0198
  • £ = alt + 0163 (pound)
  • ¥ = alt + 0165 (yen)
  • ¤ = alt + 0164 (general currency)
  • ¿ = alt + 0191
  • — = alt + 0151

It is possible to make characters like these on Mac OS X by holding down the option key.

  • a = å
  • b = ∫
  • c = ç
  • s = ß
  • n = ˜(tilde press n by itself after that and a ñ pops up)
  • g = ©
  • r = ®

Forum-only Alt Codes:

  • † = alt + 0134

More are out there.

For Linux alt codes under Gnome and KDE a reference guide is available here.

Trivia

  • On 25 February, 2009, a player's use of a certain alt code enabled him to disconnect the players around him. See February 2009 Crash for more information.
  • — (alt + 0151) used to allow players to type in capitals. When typed, the chat engine recognised the character as existing even though there was no visual symbol for it, so by placing it between each letter, the letters would be allowed to each be capitalized the same way they would be if it had been a space between them. The line was eventually given a symbol around the end of 2009 or beginning of 2010 and no longer allowed players to type in capitals.
